Lohri is celebrated in the coldest month of winter on January 13th or the last day of poh (Desi Month). It is a festival celebrated by the people of punjab, haryana and some parts of himachal & jammu kashmir.

About

Dulha Bhatti

Dulha Bhatti was a thief at the time of rulers in india. He would see a lot of hindu girls getting sold in market places. He helped the poor girls by getting them married with well known hindu boys.

There was a brahmin who had two daughters sundri and mundri. He got both of them engaged with two boys. People of the area spread out that the brahmins daughters were so beautiful that the king got to know. The brahmin went to the boys families to get her daughter married as soon as he could but the boys family disagreed because they were scared of the king. When going on his way back he met dulha bhatti. Dulha Bhatti took the girls and boys into a forest and lit a fire and got them married. He gave the girls 1kg of sugar each. Lohri is celebrated to remember dulha bhatti and what good deeds he did by lighting a fire and giving out sweets.

History

Customs & Traditions

In the morning, children in villages go to door to door knocking and people give out money, wheat, peanuts & Gur. In the evening people get together with a dholi (drummer) and go to houses with newborn boys and newly married boys. Nowadays people celebrate Lohri for newborn girls as well. People light bonfires and throw sesame seeds into it.

Reflection

I used to celebrate lohri by going with the villagers and the dholi in the evening. Afterwards I would come back home and light a bonfire with my family and throw sesame seeds into it. My family would get together around the fire and eat rawri, gachak, peanuts and other traditional sweets.
