A Journey Through Time.

May 01, 1901.Today I’m going to write about the

long journey I took going from just being a lawyer to being the Prime Minister of Australia.

It was the year 1860, I remember it like it was yesterday, the whole of Australia was governed by different people, it was like the different states was other countries. Today was the day people started talking about being “Australia” not just a “New South Welshman” but and “Australian”.

So Now I skip ahead 30 years and move to the year 1890. During the 1890’s the citizens of Australia have started to realise that becoming one nation would be very beneficial in many ways, such as; Defence against an invading country, Controlling the Economy and that One Nation would be much more powerful then 6 miniature colonies, all run by different people. With one person running the whole country, every state will have basically the same laws to live by.

Still in the year 1890, The premier of New South Wales, Henry Parkes has persuaded all the premiers to come and discuss federation at the “Australasian Federation Convention” which was held in Melbourne. Then one year later another convention was held in New South Wales, each colony sent seven of their highest representatives and we worked on the Australian Constitution, Andrew Inglis Clark, Samuel Griffith, Charles Kingston, and myself.

It was the year 1893, the colonies of Australia were not happy with the way the Constitution was set out, they wanted a chance to vote to see if they liked it, so we all agreed on a National meeting to re-draft the Australian Constitution.

It’s been a few years past now since the last Convention and now that it was 1897, we decided we needed to go back and have a good argue about the whole constitution, after hearing about what the public wants, except for Queensland this time because they did not support Federation. We made many changes and we had another convention in 1898 to finish it off and finally it was done.

1899, the year of the Referendum, 3 states still did not approve of the constitution, so yet again we had to change it. One of the changes was that there was going to be a new state made to be the capital city, so that nobody can argue about having the capital in their state, now known as Canberra. And finally after all of these changes, the constitution was accepted where it was needed.

The year 1900, we were finally making some serious progress. We six representatives, one from each state, had to travel to London, to see Queen Victoria to get the constitution approved, and it was, it was passed on by the British Parliament then passed on by the Queen and signed. Which meant that on January the 1st 1901, Australia would be merged together and known as the “Commonwealth Of Australia”.

In 1900 again, there was a gold rush in Western Australia which lead people to re-thing become a part of australia so they would be able to trade their goods with the rest of the country. A Referendum was held and Western Australia was accepted into becoming a part of the Commonwealth Of Australia.

And so it gets to this very day, the day I became the Prime Minister of Australia, this very thing happened in Centennial Park, in Sydney by a great man named Lord Hopetoun, The first Governor General (the Representation for the Queen). And after that very moment, I was known as the Prime Minister Of The Commonwealth Of Australia.

Later on in my life, on the 9th of May, Australia will form a Commonwealth Parliament, and we will have a Senate and Representatives. On the 9th of May, we first sat in The parliament house in Canberra, which is now known as “Old Parliament House” and on the 10th of May, 1988, The “New Parliament House” will open.
