I. The Importance of the Community College in the HigherEducation Landscape- Brief Review and History

Community colleges became a national network in the1960’s with the opening of 457 public communitycolleges.

The number of community colleges has steadily grownsince the 1960s. At present, there are 1,166 communitycolleges in the United States. When the branchcampuses of community colleges are included, thenumber totals about 1600.
