WHY SHOULD WE USE TECHNOLOGY FOR
LEARNING?
By Whitney Randall and inspired by John Cage

1. EXPANSIONS OF TIME AND PLACE
Technology is no substitute for an inspiring teacher. However, on-line materials are far more available. Students can access work anytime and anywhere besides the classroom.
2. DEPTH OF UNDERSTANDING
Using a projector, the teacher can conduct lessons on a screen and demonstrate concepts far more easily than with just words and a chalk-board.
3. NEW MEDIA FOR SELF-EXPRESSION
Instead of just writing in a notebook, students now can make a PowerPoint presentation, record/edit spoken word, do digital photography, make a video, run a web based school radio or TV station, make a website, create a blog, etc.
4. COLLABORATION
This is the ability to work collaboratively on projects with others who may not be physically close. This can best be done using modern computer tools such as the web, email, instant messaging and cell phone.
5. GOING GLOBAL
The Internet permits free video conferencing which permits interaction in real time with sister schools in other countries.
6. INDIVIDUAL PACING AND SEQUENCE
Students can learn at their speed. Instead of interrupting the class, they can repeat work on the computers at their pace.
7. LEARNING VS. TEACHING
Instead of teachers always giving lectures, now with technology they can be given projects and learn on their own.
8. WEIGHT
Textbooks and binders are so overwhelming when carrying them to class everyday, but one laptop or Ipad is durable and light-weight.
9. LOWER COST
Having access to the web is now located at libraries, schools, universities, cell phones, etc. They all are available at a low price or even free of charge.
