7) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in

the progression from it to the full product?

From making the music magazine I have learnt that research is vital if you want to be able to adjust the contents and design to appeal to the target audience and get their attention. Working on my preliminary task I didn’t know that many conventions and didn’t think about the reasons for doing what I did.

I did a research to study competitor magazines, find out about institutions, and ask what the target audience wanted to read about, which I didn't do on my preliminary task. I didn't identify my target audience either, as I already knew it was college students.

I have learnt that lots of planning makes your final product look more professional. It allows you to organize and structure your magazine, and also see which of your ideas works better. I didn't quite plan my college magazine, only where I wanted the photographs to be taken and what the cover lines could be about. By planning everything in my music magazine I saved lots of time when it came to taking the photographs as I already knew which clothes the artists should wear, which props I wanted to use, and all the angles and camera distances these images should be in. It also helped me with the constructing of the pages, as I already knew which fonts to use and where I wanted the images and texts to be put.

There is a significant difference between my preliminary task and my final music magazine as I didn’t have the same knowledge of magazine conventions when I was making the college magazine, and neither did any research or planning.
