505 North American Championship Chicago 2010
505 North Americans 2010 505 Fleet 13 and Chicago Yacht Club are excited to host the 2010 NA
championship in Chicago, IL. We are planning to bring you to our city and lake during their best, the summer.
Our tentative dates are June 23rd-27th. We are exploring interest in a pre-NAs during the Chicago NOOD June 18 th-20th
Known for our cold winters and our windy politicians, Chicago’s summers are what make lovers of this city.
With miles of uninterrupted parkland stretching along the lakeshore from the city’s borders, our harbors are a part Chicago’s “Urbs in Horto” concept.
Since it’s founding in 1875, Chicago Yacht Club has hosted numerous major championships and in cooperation with the Chicago Park District, has bolstered its commitment to one-design sailing with its beautifully rebuilt Belmont Harbor station.
Last sailed on Lake Michigan at Waukegan in 1978, the 2010 NAs promises exciting sailing, a spectacular venue, and a preview of the waters our Olympians may sail in 2016, we hope to see you all there.
Chicago – “The Second City”
The nation’s 3rd largest city, Chicagoland is home to some 9.7 million people.
As the birthplace of the skyscraper and the American gangster, Chicago is a diverse international city with many sights, sounds, and flavors. This regatta committee highly
recommends the Chicago architectural tour on the Chicago river to any visitor.
Chicago’s attractions are far too numerous to list here but, much more information can be found at www.choosechicago.com.
Sailing just offshore of this modern metropolis is simply stunning and makes for a truly unique venue.
Lake Michigan
The 5th largest lake in the world often strikes first time visitors as more of an inland sea.
The Lake’s size and location below the Jet Stream allows for an enormous breadth of weather and sailing conditions.
It is not uncommon to sail one day in flat-water, 20kts of offshore wind, and 85 degrees and the next day to sail in 10 foot swells, 15kts, and 74 degrees.
Chicagoans are known to say: “if you don’t like the weather, just wait 10 minutes.”
Sailing on Lake Michigan
Late June on Lake Michigan offers a wide range of possible weather conditions.
The three most likely sailing conditions: High pressure “Clipper” systems bring cool air from Canada and
strong NNE winds over a period of three days. The 300 mile fetch leads to some large waves and steady breeze.
Low pressure systems bring heat and blustery SW winds. This can make for fantastic flat-water sailing in “nuclear” conditions.
Stalled High pressure, the Lake is still cool enough in June to allow a nice thermal to develop. While not windy, a steady 7-11kts can build out of the ESE.
Did we mention that the water is fresh?
Chicago Yacht Club - Belmont
Located at 300 W Belmont Ave, CYC’s Belmont station is a dedicated one-design sailing facility just a few miles north of downtown Chicago.
There are three hoists and one large ramp available for launching and plenty of adjacent lawn for boat storage.
It is just a two minute sail from the ramp to the open waters of Lake Michigan.
CTA public transport to and from downtown is a short walk from the club.
There will be a security guard in the dinghy-park overnight.
We have the full support of the CYC race committee and their fleet of powerboats.
We are looking into bringing in an outside PRO familiar with 505 racing to ensure a quality championship.
Food and beverage details are being arranged with CYC staff and our event sponsors.
