"STOPPING BY WOODS ON A SNOWY EVENING" BY ROBERT FROST

• Stopping by Woods on a Snowy EveningWhose woods these are I think I know. His house is in the village though; He will not see me stopping hereTo watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queerTo stop without a farmhouse nearBetween the woods and frozen lakeThe darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shakeTo ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound's the sweepOf easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep. But I have promises to keep,And miles to go before I sleep,And miles to go before I sleep.

• An influence that Robert Frost had on the 20th century with this particular poem was that it had symbolism. Symbolism was popular in the 20th century as a common way to describe a meaning of something natural. As for in this poem, Frost talks about walking in a snowy woods. The snowy woods represents the harshness of how life was in the World Wars. Since he walked too far into the harshness, he soon found out that he was not welcome there. Once he turned, he knew that he would not be able to sleep for quite some time, which represents all of the restless and sleepless nights people had in the World Wars.

"FOG" BY CARL SANDBURG

• The fog comes on little cat feet.

It sits looking over harbor and city on silent haunches and then moves on.

• In this poem, the “fog” that is described represents the hard working days and how the cities were changing over that time. The fog stays, but not for too long, until it moves on to watch over the next city or town.
