• The Punic Wars caused the gain of land
• The expansion had a bad effect too because as it grew, farmers started not to make a good living for their families
• Also as the land grew more slaves started to take over the farmers jobs

• The cause of the first Punic War is Rome sent troops to Sicily
• The cause of the second Punic War was Hannable wanted to conquer Rome
• The cause of the third Punic War was Rome wanted to defeat Carthage

• Concrete roads were made in 100 A.D.

• Aqueducts brought water to Romans

Role of Law
• Romans believed written laws should rule them
• Over time Roman laws changed to give more rights to common people
• By 445 B.C. the law code altered so that it allowed Plebeians to marry Patricians

Political Corruption
• 1 of Rome’s most serious problems was choosing new emperors
• Romans never created an effective system to determine how new emperors were chosen
• Mainly, the Praetorian Guard gained complete authority to choose the new emperor
• In 186 A.D. they began selling the throne to the highest bidder
Trajan
• Trajan reduced taxes, increased free distribution of food, took steps to maintain supply of grain
• Trajan undertook a major building company to improve the quality of life
• Trajan established military colonies
• Trajan also supervised the construction of several impressive structures
• One bad thing Trajan did was encourage blood sport events
Augustus
• Augustus was the first emperor of Rome
• Augustus failed to keep his empire safe
• He also established the fire department and police force

Farming
• Farming was the backbone of Rome’s food supply
• Farming supplied grain
• Farmers took up over 90% of Rome’s population

sea• They traded silk and grain• Luxurious exotic goods
that were traded were bronze statues, bottles and jars, games, musical instruments, chairs, linens, and artwork were mainly what the wealthy traded
Inflation
• Rome economy suffered from inflation beginning after the reign of Marcus Aurelius
• So much gold was being spent by the Romans for luxury items, which meant less gold to put in coins
• To make up for the loss value of the gold coin, merchants raised prices on the goods they sold
• Soon many people stopped using coins and started to barter for goods they needed
Unemployment
• A farmer who had to pay his workmen could not produce goods cheaply Instead slave owners could sell their crops for cheaper prices At a point in time, the emperor was importing to feed over 100,000 people

Role of men
• Most Roman families were patriarchal
• As head of the house hold, a father had absolute power
• The father had total control of his wife, children and slaves
Role of women
• Legally, Roman women enjoyed a significant advantage over women in Greece because women could own personal property
• The most important role was to bear children and raise them to honor traditional values
• Women had to have a male authority figure

Patricians
• Patricians were favored in Rome
• Patricians ran the government through their control of senate
• Patricians also acted as leaders in Rome social and economic life

Plebeians
• Plebeians had little power and influence in government
• Plebeians could not serve as priests Wealthy
• Plebeians could not advance politically by marriage

Conclusion
• The most important thing I learned in this unit was that now in our society, women have more privileges and can own as much land as they want to. The reason why is because I myself am a young lady and when I grow up I would like to own land to plant plants and to have the lands for other ideas
