California became U.S territory in 1847.

There are 58 counties within California total, the San Bernardino County being the largest.

The total population in 2010 was 37,253,956 people.

One out of every eight United States residents lives in California.

The first motion picture theater opened in Los Angeles on April 2, 1902.

Named after the Platte River from the French meaning "broad river.“

Nicknamed the "Cornhusker State" .

It was the 37th state in the USA.

State capital is Lincoln.

Largest city is Omaha.

Capital of Wyoming is Cheyenne.

Name for residents is “Wyomingites”.

Wyoming's official flag was adopted in 1917.

Wyoming was the first state to give women the right to vote.

Wyoming has the lowest population of all 50 United States.

Origin of state name: Taken from the Spanish for the "colored" and was applied to the Colorado river.

The capital is Denver.

Between 1763 and 1848, Colorado belonged in varying proportions to France, Spain, Mexico and the Republic of Texas.

Denver lays claim to the invention of the Cheeseburger. The trademark for the name Cheeseburger was awarded in 1935 to Louis Ballast.

Colorado has the highest mean altitude of all the states.

They have the only American flag that is not a rectangle.

Residents are called Ohioans.

Vermont was the first state admitted to the Union after the ratification of the Constitution.

Vermont has more cows than people.

From the French “vert mont,” meaning “green mountain”.

The origin of the name is based on Chippewa Indian word "meicigama" meaning "great water" and refers to the Great Lakes.

Detroit is known as the car capital of the world.

Michigan has the longest freshwater shoreline in the world.

Michigan was the first state to guarantee every child the right to tax-paid high school education.

Although Michigan is often called the "Wolverine State“, there are no longer any wolverines in Michigan.

The largest lake in Florida is Lake Okeechobee.

The first graded road built in Florida was Old Kings Road in 1763.

The world's first Skyscraper was built in Chicago in 1885.

Metropolis, the home of Superman, really exists in Southern Illinois.

The Illinois state dance is square dancing.
