Job announcement

There are literally many of newspapers publishing in our country. Because of this, editions are constantly in need of not only fresh material but writers. Some positions can be had with little effort if one has experience. However, part time jobs can still be gained by writers with little experience. Many writers begin on the internet, only to find out that the pay is abysmal. Others seek out magazines for freelance work. For a writer starting out, a newspaper gig can be a dream.

10 Ways to Get a Newspaper Job:

1. Study the newspaper in question: Many newspapers have editors with a certain

style. If one wants to work for the sports page it would be best to see what kind of material is covered and how it is covered by the sports section. Consider the members of high school, college, and pro sports covered. This example applies to all paying positions, including arts and entertainment sections, because without knowing the standard writing style and stories focused upon, your chances of being hired are smaller.

2. Send in letters: A good way to being in newspaper work is to

publish in the paper. Often talented writers will shine here. There are stories of writers sending in letters of a high quality and being offered jobs based upon the merit of their writing. Show respect for the newspaper, but one should show a respect for the workers there as well. Once the letter is published, the editors will be more familiar with your writing and may become more willing to take a chance on you.

3. Job shadow: After studying the paper in question and

making attempts at letters, the next logical step is to do a job shadow. Surprisingly, most companies more than welcome students or non-students into their buildings to study the business, and this is the case with newspapers too. This puts a foot in the door. Consider interviewing each writer and editor in the section one wants to write for, and see how they got there.

4. Show up: The next step after the job shadow would

be to start asking about either freelancing or parts time work. If one has newspaper experience, the chances a higher. However, many writers begin with nothing while freelancing for papers. Stringer positions, for one, require little if any experience. All one needs is a willingness to show up and an aptitude for learning the basics.

5. Continue: Often, the job will not come easily. I had to

call a newspaper for six months prior to getting my first paid work as stringer. The patience is a must; keep calling the paper and asking for work. Send in more letters, and even send example articles to the editors.

6. Learn everything: One thing respected in newspaper work is

an ability to learn more than one job. Try to get an understanding of more than one position when visiting the paper on job shadows. Newspapers have dozens of workers, or hundreds, moving into different every year.

7. Salary Salary isn’t high, but it can lead to steady

paychecks if one attains a higher position like editor.

8. Continue sending resume out: Newspaper work doesn’t make many

writers rich. If one has a job at this point, it is important to continue sending out resumes to higher papers. This might sound like a waste of time, but if one has the necessary experience there is always a chance. If done with respect to the paper one currently works for, there is no problem.

9. Build clips: By this step, there is a chance for steady

work. The important thing to do is build upon the clips one has. Clips are articles that you had published in the paper. These can be invaluable in getting higher-paying jobs.

10. Last chance: If these strategies have found no success,

one can look to outside sources for revenue. Just like newspapers, online sites are in constant need of content. Since they pay less, they would be more open to inexperienced writers. But even though they pay less, the clips can still be built. Writing on the internet has also helped many writers become better, because many different sites allow others to comment on your work.

Follow-Up Tips:

Every job announcement you find will most likely have been placed by a company representative or recruiter who wants to display the in the best light. To determine whether the glowing review of the company is valid or not, you’ll need to do some more snooping around, and that means a bit of

Net. Sleuthing.

Page 14: 5 Job Ad Oyunchimeg.Ya

Everyone knows how to look for a job. You go to job search websites, read the ads in the newspaper, ask friends if their employer is hiring and just apply for everything even remotely related to your skills. Send out hundreds of resumes, and hope you get on interview. Bite your fingernails in anxiety. Pray.

While part of a job search involves the above (hopefully without the “hundreds of resumes ” pars ), to find a job that’s actually good you’ll need to be a bit more methodical. After all, were looking for our Dream job—not just any old thing to pay the bills, and that takes a little bit of planning.
