NCLCA Learning Center Leadership Certification

Eligibility for Level 1

• Individual who has entered the field fairly recently

• Minimally holds a Bachelor’s Degree• Has basic knowledge of learning

assistance theory and practice

Eligibility for Level 2

• Professional working in the field for 3 to 5 years

• Minimally holds a Bachelor’s Degree, possibly with some graduate coursework

• Has substantial knowledge of learning assistance

• Has made notable contributions to the field of learning assistance

Eligibility for Level 3

• Minimally holds a Master’s Degree• Has 6 to 10 years of work experience in the

field of learning assistance, with possible progress toward an advanced degree

• Committed to the field of learning assistance • Has made substantial contributions to the

profession

Eligibility for Level 4

• Applicant meets all of the Level 3 requirements

• Plus extensive commitment to the field beyond that of Level 3

Benefits of achieving Level 4:• Highest certification available• Lifetime certification and a one-time only fee

Upgrades and Renewals

• Upgrades and renewals are available for Levels 1, 2 and 3.

• Upgrades are appropriate when work at a higher level can be documented and can occur at any time.

• Renewals are appropriate when additional work at the original level of certification can be documented. Initial renewal is after 2 years, with subsequent renewals every 5 years thereafter.

• Upgrades and renewals for Level 4 are not necessary.

How Do I Apply?

• Visit www.nclca.org/certification.htm• Fees:

– Level 1: $50 (initial or renewal)– Level 2: $75 (initial or renewal)– Level 3: $100 (initial or renewal)– Level 4: $250 (initial—no renewal needed)

• Applications can be submitted at any time; reviews take about 8 weeks to complete.

Purpose of the Learning Centers of Excellence Program

• Promote professional standards of excellence for learning centers

• Recognize the need for flexibility and inclusiveness in meeting these standards

• Encourage centers to develop, maintain and assess quality programs and services to enhance student learning

• Honor the history of established and unique centers

• Celebrate the outstanding achievements of centers that meet and exceed these standards

Development of Learning Centers of Excellence Program

Inspired by the works of Frank Christ, the Council on Advancement of Standards in Higher Education, and John Gardner, NCLCA has developed seven major categories and subsets of those categories under which application packets will be evaluated. Each category is individually weighted in determining the final evaluation of the application packet.
