Slaves, in all things obey those who are your masters on earth, not with external service, as those who merely please men, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. Colossians 3:22

Slave (δουλος) Bondservant: Luke 1:38, a person who commits himself

to another for service for a period of time.

Don’t come to the text with presuppositions

Slave = employee

Live in God’s will no matter your circumstance, 1 Corinthians 7:21-24

Slaves, in all things obey those who are your masters on earth, not with external service, as those who merely please men, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. Colossians 3:22

… in all things obey (ὑπακουω hypakouō present active imperative), standard procedure is obedience.

… not with external service (eye-service KJV, more literal ὀφθαλμοδουλια)

… with sincerity of heart: generously (2 Cor 8:1-3)

… fearing the Lord (φοβουμενοι phoboumenoi present participle), continual fear of the Lord Colossians 1:15-17, Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, Colossians 3:23

Whatever you do… whatever your job is, do it well. Every area of our lives should be submitted to the Lord

… do your work (ἐργαζεσθε present middle imperative), this is for your own good … heartily, literally from the soul/life (ψυχη)

… as for the Lord rather than for men

A picture of submission to the Spirit

All people have a debt, Romans 1-3

The debt can only be paid through faith, Romans 4-5

We can only be sanctified through submission to the Spirit, Romans 6-8 Baptism of the Spirit, Romans 6:1-11

Submit to the Spirit, Romans 6: 12-19 Obedience from the heart, 6:17-18

You are not the person you were before justification

… knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve. For he who does wrong will receive the consequences of the wrong which he has done, and that without partiality. Colossians 3:24-25

Knowing (εἰδοτες present participle), continually know, always keep in mind the Lord has a reward

Will receive (ἀπολαμβανω, future middle indicative), 2 John 8

Reward: an earned reward, only use in the NT
