WHAT IS DEFORESTATION ?

• Deforestation is when forests get cleared.

• Trees get cut down.• Animals get chased out of the

forest.

Trees get cut down so we can have paper.

WHY DO PEOPLE DEFOREST ?

• To make paper for us.• To get wood and make furniture

for us.• To build houses and roads.• To make room for agriculture.• To turn the land into cattle

pasture.

Agriculture means things like farming ,such as growing crops, growing rice , growing fruits and vegetables.

Cattle pasture is a place where animals can roam free ,eat and drink.

WHY IS DEFORESTATION

BAD ?• Deforestation is not bad, but too

much of it is.• Animals will lose their homes.• Trees produce oxygen.• Forest help to prolong human

race, by producing medicine.• Trees help cool and regulate the

earth.

Prolong means extend.

Regulate means adjust and control.

How does deforestation affect life cycles

Eg. Salmons.

When salmons lay eggs , they lay it on the river bed .Then since there are no more trees, there will be more floods .When there are floods, the flood will wash the sand on to the eggs and then the eggs will not be able to breath and die.

So let’s say the mother fish laid 500 eggs and 300 of them died. Then the rest of the 200 eggs became baby salmons still attached to their egg yolk. The floods will still kill let’s say a 100 of these baby salmons. So the 100 baby salmons become juvenile salmons. But because of deforestation, there will be no more trees and so the juvenile will have no place to hide from the other predators, and so they will get eaten up . There will be about 20 left . And those 20 juvenile will become fully grown salmon. So as all these things keep repeating ,the numbers will keep decreasing and soon the salmon will be EXTINCT!

THE PHILIPPINES EAGLE

• The Philippines eagle is the other species most at risk from deforestation. In the 1930s, an estimated 10,000 eagles were soaring over the forests. Due to deforestation, there are only 63 left, 16 are in captivity, and 47 have been spotted in the wild. This monkey-eating eagle is not found anywhere else in the world. The Philippines eagle is one of the world’s biggest, with a wing span of 7 feet, and generally weighs from 5 kg to 9 kg. It eats monkey, lemurs, bats and snakes. It talons have a grip three times stronger than man’s and it can break a monkey’s neck or crush a snake’s skull with ease..
