Halloween (1978) is a truly scary, stylistic and attractive, awfully well-crafted slasher/horror typical from young film director John CarpenterThis is a poster of the movies Halloween. The main thing that focuses the audience the most is the use of mise en scene. Firstly the title Halloween is written in orange, this may give a connotation of fire and danger, and also it’s the colour of a pumpkin which relates to Halloween season itself. The typography of the title is bold and in capital letters written in white font which shows connotation of awareness that something bad is going to happen. The background colour is black which symbolises death, hell, maybe connation's of evilness and also danger. It gives a dangerous atmosphere, also gives the audience the hint that it deadly/gloomy feeling toward the film. The colour black can also give the audience an unknown/suspicious feeling, and this will automatically drive them into watching the film. The name of the title ‘Halloween’ already will give the audience an idea of what type of genre the film will be, as in Halloween there are lots of scary monsters, therefore will be a horror genre movie. The central image is very powerful, they have used a pumpkin as a mask, and once again it emphasises the season of Halloween and gives a powerful outlook to people that the face is the most important part of the body. It can also alert people that when it’s Halloween the faces are covered giving a suspicious though to people of who the monster may be and keep the film thrilling throughout the ending. The audience will automatically be interested in the movie. The knife also gives a connotation of danger and death, as the shape of the mask and the knife go well together. This emphasises the fact that there will be violence in this film, and that a weapon will be defiantly used. The end of the knife has a silver shine to it, it shows that the knife is very sharp and therefore it gives a more horrific feeling to the audience. ‘The night he came home’ this is a small tagline on the bottom left hand corner, this gives more thrill to the poster, and again it shows that there is more thrill to it then you think there is. From the phrase, you know that something will happen no matter what when the main guy returns home. On a whole, the colours used for the central image, oranges and yellow are well used. The two colours go well together. The colour scheme for this poster is obviously, black, orange and white. The colour orange is a bright colour, but in this poster it clearly shows that it has been dimmed down to give a dull, boring, scary atmosphere to the audience. These colour go in well with the sense of genre as black and white are most common in horror posters, straight away the audience will notice by looking at the poster that it is a horror related topic.

This poster conveys a sense of narrative by including a knife in the image of a pumpkin, also it’s about Halloween. Audience will immediately have the feel that it’s a horror related film. The colour scheme black, white and orange is the most common for horror poster and by looking at this one you will automatically know that the genre is about buy looking at the colours used. White and black are very common when it comes to horror genre. The knife gives us a hint of how the victims get killed off in the film looks very nasty and cruel.

This is a poster of scream 4 (2011). As you can see from the poster, the colour scheme for this poster is, black, red, and white. These colors go well together, and it gives the audience the idea of what kind of genre the film is. The colors give away that the genre of this film is horror/slasher. The blackness in the poster may symbolize the danger which may give the audience that something scary is going to happen. The red represents blood, gives audience that there will definitely be gore in this film. The white/grey may mean that there will be a mystery in this film. The three characters on the front cover are all wearing black, this could be to emphasize the genre of the movie and to make people aware of that this is a movie which contains death and has a dark atmosphere. They look all have a straight face on and look rather disturbing, show that they are not very innocent and that they have another side to them which you can only find out by watching the film. The character has light on the faces which makes them stand out, which symbolizes that they have the most important role in the film. You can also see that there's shadow which tells us that there is a dark side to them. The characters faces blend in with the fog showing us that they have a hidden side to them and also give horror feel to it. The tagline at the top of the poster, ‘new decade new rules’ tells us that the movies won’t be like other scream films, it will have something new, a new twist in it. The tagline used two colors, which is red and white; the white may give connotations of purity. It also tells us that although there is another movie of scream it gives different approaches and different rules to the previous one. It has also been written in capital letters which gives the audience a warning. The word ‘decade’ and ‘rules’ have been written in red which shows that it’s the highlight of the movie. The background of the poster is a cloudy / steamy image of the scream mask in a faded way, it is right behind the characters , this can mean that the monster is somewhere around them, but they have no clue of who it may be, such as it remains a mystery. The title SCER4M, they have used white/silver colour to the font leaving the 4 in the word scream as 4 showing the audience that it’s the fourth episode. They have made the ‘m’ look sharper which may emphasize the weapon used in the film. It’s written in capital and casual letters, making it stand out and it contrast well with the poster. Above the title scream says ‘A film by Wes Craven’ in small font compared to the tagline, shown at the top, but it still stands out because it’s in capital blocks and the name ‘Wes Craven is in red so it draw a lot of attention, so that people who watched his previous film/fans may want to watch this one as well. He is also a well known director for horror films. Below the title scream, there are names of their main characters in the film which links with the three headshots on the poster. This tells us that they are the most important character in the film. ‘April 15th everywhere’ is at the bottom of the page written in red capital letter making audience aware of that its going to be in every cinemas, this way it gains more audience.

This poster conveys a sense of narrative by having a mask faded in the back ground with the faces of the I’ve main character that are involve in this film. The expression of the five characters looks as they have the face a big challenge and that is the monster that is covered in a mask. The way they’ve given a cloudy effect can connote that they are stuck in a trap with the monster and are finding it hard to get out, the only solution is the believe will help in whatever happens ,happens. The poster looks dark which conveys the sense of narrative as this film is a horror related film and it gives away that by the way it’s been portrayed. Black can connote the darkness and a trap that they are trapped in.

This is the poster of ‘The Texas Chainsaw massacre. This poster is very interesting; you can notice many conventions straight away. The typography seems to be very simple bold and outstanding, the first letter is small, and ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ is written in bold which shows that it is important to notify than other words on the poster. The title has been placed right at the top centre of the page saw that the audience automatically draw their attention to the title straight away. Also, it has been written in capital letters, which may represent masculinity. Noticing that there's a tagline below the title ,‘witness the birth of fear’ this will make the audience wonder of what may happen and they will want to watch it , its gives a terrifying look for the character in this film and makes the film more scary as it will be like a rebirth. The texture of the poster, looks old, and looks as if the place he is in is damaged. This can suggest that the monster/villain himself could be damage physically and mentally. The main image turned out to mysterious, it doesn’t give a lot away, this will increase the audience because they would be suspicious and will want to find out what going to happen in the film. ‘the beginning’ people will like to watch it as the Texas chainsaw massacre is a famous film, and the fact that it is the beginning, will interest the audience more. The lightings used for this poster shows a good example of mise en scene, it shows connotations that it’s a film full of darkness, and mystery’s. The cloudiness', gives a dull and scary atmosphere, the colors black, grey, brown gives conventions of the genre horror. The posters background is fully covered with dark, gloomy clouds which symbolize death, danger and even sadness. Also you can see a guy walking towards it, this may give us a hint to the fact that he is walking into danger, and got himself in a hard position and this tells us clearly that he is the monster. The image of the monster, is a long shot, it shows the back of him and does not show the front side, this will make the audience to more interested into watching the film. The fact that the face is not showing, give connotations of the genre of the film, that it is a horror/slasher movie. The guy in the poster is holding chainsaw, which tells the audience that this film will contain gore. It will give away to the audience that there will there murder/death in this film. From these analyses, you can easily tell that the target audience for this film is older people. By analyzing this poster, I have noticed that as the guy in the poster has been placed on the right bottom hand corner shows that it has used the rule of third. Using this rule grabs more attention from people as people eyes will focus on a third of the page. The cloths that the guy wears on the posters portrays that he is mysterious and hiding his identity. It also shows his masculinity in the way he is holding the chainsaw, very casually which may connote that his job is finally done. The image shows that he has very broad shoulder and walks in manly way, this look shows that he is not the one to mess with.

This poster conveys a sense of narrative, in the way that the monster carries a chainsaw, in a slashed film it involves gruesome murder, it’s not hard to guess why has got a chainsaw in his hand. He uses that to kill the victims and he enjoys it. He walks into a mist of clouds which shows that he likes to be in a dark place and a dark atmosphere. This conveys the sense of narrative as it goes well will the slasher and horror type. When you see the poster immediately you will have the feel that something dangerous will happen in this film. This is what attracts the audience.
