Digital Citizenship

• Essential skills for today’s students

• We live in a digital world

• We as teachers all have the responsibility of helping our students navigate, interact and thrive in that world.

Page 8: 21st century digital citizenship

What can we as teachers/administrators/schools/parents/community members do

to teach our children?

Beginning the Discussion

• Formalized, embedded instruction is best.• Some schools have a Digital Citizenship class

students must all pass in order to graduate• In addition, every teacher must reinforce the

skills learned in every class• (If it’s ok to cheat and steal in Mr. Sample’s

room, then it’s ok to cheat and steal anywhere.)

Parental Instruction

• Also essential!• Moms and Dads don’t know what to look for• Most don’t know about or understand the

tools their children use:– Texting and smart phones– Facebook and AIM– Skype and tools-yet-to-be-invented

Planning Your Approach

We all must work together to succeed!
