Summer RocksSummer is going to rock throughout Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland. Girl Scouts builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. By encouraging girls to participate in activities centered a round Girl Scouts’ three keys to leadership: Discover, Connect, and Take Action they will be on their way to success. There are plenty of opportunities for girls from five to 17 that will rock their summer. Girls may choose to stay close to home or venture out for new experiences; for a day or up to a week.
NEW for 2010 are resident camp options. Girls who are ready for a longer stay away from home may choose from a variety of resident camp programs from Girl Scouts of Colorado, Eastern Oklahoma, Missouri Heartland, Northeast Kansas and Northwest Missouri, or Spirit of Nebraska. We are excited to share programs from our neighboring councils with you. Many of the councils offer Counselor-in-Training (CIT) I and II, Wrangler-in-Training (WIT) programs and many other leadership opportunities for Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors. Don’t miss our Resident Camp Options section beginning on page 36.
Let’s rock this summer together.

At-A-Glance Guide
Summer Program StaffGirl Scouts take safety seriously. In an effort to assure you of your daughter’s safety and well-being, we want to take a moment to explain how we hire and choose our paid seasonal staff.
Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland hires adult seasonal staff to fill specific job responsibilities (camp directors, waterfront, program activities, unit counselors, etc.) for the delivery of summer program. Only adults ages 18 or older may directly supervise participants. All seasonal staff must complete a written application with three character/skill references. All references are checked, a personal interview with the site director is conducted and the applicant undergoes a Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and Department of Motor Vehicles background check. In addition, supervisors regularly monitor the performance of seasonal staff members.
About Our SitesGirl Scouts of Kansas Heartland program staff ensures that all programs taking place on Girl Scout property or off-site locations follow the Girl Scout “Safety-Wise” standards. You will find information about Kansas Heartland camp properties before each section.
Swimming InformationAll swimming activities are supervised by currently certified American Red Cross Lifeguards or equivalent with adult watchers as required by Girl Scout “Safety-Wise” standards.
Camp Loga Vista is located on Wellington Lake. The public swimming area is roped and buoyed.
Starwoods Outdoor Center swimming area is a small private lake with a gentle sloping sand beach, a swimming dock that has a roped and buoyed swimming area marked by depth from one to 10 feet, and no diving is allowed from the swimming dock.
Boating InformationAll boating activities are under the direction of a qualified waterfront/aquatic director and certified lifeguards as required by Girl Scout “Safety-Wise.” Each person wears a U. S. Coast Guard approved personal flotation device (PFD) at all times when boating regardless of swimming ability.
Safety and Sites
Note: Since Starwoods Outdoor
Center is an American Camping
Association accredited site, a range of skills
are verified during the 40 hours of on-site
training to ensure that seasonal staff can
provide quality program delivery and a safe
environment for each child placed under
their care and/or supervision.

Resident Camp OptionsGirl Scouts of Kansas Heartland in partnership with Girl Scouts of Colorado, Eastern Oklahoma, Missouri Heartland, Northeast Kansas and Northwest Missouri and Spirit of Nebraska is offering exciting resident camp programs for you. You will find a variety of opportunities for new adventures and experiences to meet your interest. As you read through the resident camp options you will find information about the camp property, locations, activities, capacity, and grade level for participation, registration dates, contact information and more.
FAQ’sHow do I register for resident camp? Registration for resident camp programs must be made directly with the host council during their registration period. Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland is unable to accept registration for these program offerings.
Can I use my Cookie Credits? Girl Scout of Kansas Heartland Cookie Credits may be applied toward resident camp programs listed within this guide. To apply Cookie Credits, complete the Cookie Credit Transfer at www.kansasgirlscouts.org and submit by May 10, 2010. (Cookie Credits are applied to family accounts on April 1, 2010. For more information about cookie credits see page 49.) Cookie credits may not be used for deposits for out-of-council camp programs.
How old do I have to be to go resident camp? Participation grade levels vary by location and activities. Each council has provided information for the appropriate grade level for the resident camp program.
How do I know if I am ready for an extended period (three to 14 days or more) away from home? This is important for both girls and parents to know if you (and your parents) are ready for an extended stay away from home. Girls who have developed these traits are most likely ready for camp:• Independent: She can choose her own clothes, brush her teeth and take care of chores without a lot of supervision.• Confident: She handles new situations without becoming overly anxious.• Aware: She has already stayed away from her family and knows she can do it.• Social: She has been with other girls her own age while apart from her family.• Self-reliant: She knows her own mind and is able to make decisions for herself.• ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT GOING: She really wants to go and looks forward to being out-of-doors.
Parents are you ready? Your daughter will be more comfortable in her experience if she knows you are confident in her ability to succeed while she’s away. For many parents, sending a child to camp for the first time is an emotional experience. Before sending your daughter to camp, take time to evaluate whether YOU are ready for her to go.
