Hope everyone has a wonderful and enjoyable weekend! Upcoming Events and information to pass along to our Soldiers and Families: Best Bro Love Story- the 1st Infantry Division Social Media team launched the "Best BRO Love Story" contest out on Facebook. The contest is asking division couples to submit a photo and a few sentences about their relationship to the Division Facebook page where the photos will be voted on by the page's fans. The couple with the most "likes" on Jan. 30 will be declared the winner and will have a feature story written about them which will appear in the Valentine's Day edition of The Post. Attached, is a flier offering more specific information about the dates and rules of the contest. Running Technique Clinic - Do you want to learn to run more efficiently and with less strain on your back and knees? Do you need to run faster for your next APFT or race? Are your lungs on fire when you run uphill? Do your joints hurt when you run downhill? This 90 minute clinic will teach you how to position your body and foot strike to maximize your momentum and reduce your injuries. The clinics will be scheduled a few times a month at King Field House and Long Gym. There is only 4-5 minutes of running during the clinic for gait analysis so the clinic is fine for brand new runners. Clinics can also be scheduled for groups (unit PT, FRGs, etc) by contacting Angi. The clinic cost $15 and includes instructional handouts. Please come dressed in running clothes to start the clinic indoor and then move outside for the gait analysis and uphill and downhill running section. The next two clinics are scheduled for Monday 30 Jan. 1130-1300 at King Field House and Thur. 9 Feb. from 1200-1330 at Long Gym. Riley County Genealogical Society- The Riley County Genealogical Society has two upcoming programs that are of interest to people who want to research their family history. The Genealogical Society programs are free and open to the public. February Program: Sunday, February 19, 2012, at 2:00 p.m., Cheryl Collins will speak on "Life 100 years ago: Manhattan and Riley County in 1912." Collins is currently Director of the Riley County Historical Museum in Manhattan. She is a past President of the Kansas State Historical Society and the Kansas Museums Association. Collins currently serves on the Kansas Council on Travel and Tourism. The program is at the Manhattan Public Library Auditorium March Program: Join them for a special presentation on the 1940 census Sunday, March 11, 2012 2 :00pm at the Manhattan Public Library Auditorium It’s coming soon! Discover what is in the 1940 Census! On April 2, 2012, the 1940 Census will celebrate its 72nd birthday and become available to researchers for the first time! Learn what questions were asked, what is new since the 1930 Census, and what you need to know in order to successfully search for your ancestors. Explore what your ancestors’ lives were like in 1940 by discovering this “new” record. Their guide to this topic is Lori Cox-Paul, the Director of Archival Operations for the National Archives at Kansas City. At the Archives, Lori is responsible for development and implementation of long- and short-range plans of the archival program for the Central Plains Region. Lori also reaches out to the community through talks like these to educate the public on the resources available at the Archives. Over the course of her twenty-two year career, Lori has worked at museums both large and small. She has a B.A. in English and History from Hastings College and an M.A. in Historical Administration from Eastern Illinois University. She is active in numerous professional organizations. Kansas State Research and Extension(KSRE) - Check out the Flyers that are attached for the upcoming KSRE classes and workshops. 2012 Women’s Conference- The Women’s Conference is back again this year and open to ALL DoD card holders (this includes you men, as well). The conference will be held at Riley’s Conference Center on February 24th from 8:00am – 3:00pm. You may register online at www.rileymwr.com , you will need to register through the webtrac system and wait 24hours for a pin number to be sent electronically to you. Once you receive your pin or if you are already registered in Webtrac you can log in and register for the conference. You can also visit Leisure Travel on Custer Hill to register. OCSC- For Your Eyes Only! The Fort Riley OCSC is hosting Casino Royale! All the proceeds from the event go towards our philanthropic mission and are donated through our spring Community Assistance disbursements. It is time to complete applications for funds disbursements in support of deserving organizations/activities in our community. During the membership year, OCSC raises funds through events like our November Make It, Bake It, Fake It luncheon, Casino Royale basket auction in March, and the opportunity drawings at each luncheon. To apply for the funds this year, individuals must complete the Application for Fund Disbursement and return the application via postal mail or email. Applications must be postmarked by February 24, 2012. While anyone may apply, special consideration is given to requests that benefit groups, have a lasting benefit and are connected in some way to military personnel/families. Please note that we are unable to grant requests for funds in support of salaries, operating costs or FRGs. Applications can be found online at www.fortrileyocsc.com/community-assistance.
