Diplomacy in Asia President McKinley supported an Open Door Policy in China, all countries should trade with China and keep their ports open to all countries. Members of the Boxers started the Boxer Rebellion to end foreign control, invading foreign embassies in Beijing and killed more than 200. An international force stopped the rebellion.

Rise to Power President McKinley chose Theodore Roosevelt as his Vice-President in the Election of 1900. On September 6, 1901, Leon Czolgosz shot McKinley, who died a few days later. Theodore Roosevelt became the youngest president. He believed the U.S. had a duty to shape the “less civilized” parts of the world.

Roosevelt won the Nobel Peace prize for his efforts in ending the war between Japan and Russia. This made relations with Japan worse. The Great White Fleet, 16 new U.S. battleships, was sent around the world to show the country’s military strength. Visiting Japan did not help relations.

A Growing Presence in the Caribbean The Hay-Pauncefote Treaty let the U.S. build and control any canal. Colombia would not allow a canal. The U.S. helped Panama get independence from Colombia. The Panama Canal took ten years for the 40-mile canal that saved 8,000 travel miles.The Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine stated the U.S. would intervene in Latin American for stability. Latin Americans resented the U.S. influence.
