Appropriation

What is Appropriation?The proper adaption,

borrowing, recycling or sampling of aspects, images, or motifs of an existing object/image/creation.

Why is this different from copying, or stealing?

Properly AppropriatingTo properly appropriate, one must

recontextualise what they take, which means they must strip it of it’s old meaning and give it a new one.

Example:

Write down all you Observe

Titian’s (Tiziano Vecelli or Tiziano Vecellio, known in English as Titian) Venus of Urbino (1576) Oil on canvas. Italian Renaissance period.

Write down all you Observe

Edouard Manet’s Olympia (1863) Oil on canvas. First exhibited in 1865 Paris Salon.
