Essential Understanding Question

Cornell Notes:

Left side: What is an appositive?

Right side:

An appositive is a noun or noun phrase that renames a noun.

An appositive is a non-essential sentence element. However, an appositive often provides additional and/or meaningful information about the noun next to it.

Appositives are set apart by commas.

A sentence can stand on its own if you remove the appositive.
