States of Matter

Page 2: 1 states of matter

•All matter takes up space and has mass but matter can be found in different states.

Page 3: 1 states of matter

States of Matter

•Solid •Liquid•Gas•Plasma

Page 4: 1 states of matter

Solids•Solids-has a definite shape and volume

•2 Types of Solids

Page 5: 1 states of matter

2 Types of Solids•1. Crystals-when the arrangement of particles are in repeated patterns

•Ex: salt, sugar & snowflakes

Page 6: 1 states of matter

•2. Noncrystals- have no crystals. They are called amorphous meaning “having no form”

•Ex: Glass, Plastics & Wax

Page 7: 1 states of matter

Liquids

•Liquids- has a definite volume but no definite shape. It flows and takes the shape of its container

Page 8: 1 states of matter

Gases

•Gases- does not have a definite shape or volume

Page 10: 1 states of matter

Thermal Expansion

•Thermal Expansion- as matter becomes hotter, it expands.

Page 11: 1 states of matter

Kinetic Theory of Matter

•Kinetic Theory- constant motion of tiny particles that make up all matter Pg. 488-490

Page 12: 1 states of matter

Kinetic Theory of Matter

•Solids- particles are held very close together. The particles can only vibrate (lacks the energy to do anything else)

Page 13: 1 states of matter

Kinetic Theory of Matter

•Liquids- Particles can move around each other thus allowing liquids to take the shape of its container

Page 14: 1 states of matter

•Gases- Particles have enough energy to separate from one another. Gases can move around and fill in a container.

Solid

-packed together

-Only vibrate

Liquid

-close together

-move around each other

Gas

-separated

-Move anywhere

Plasma

•Plasma- Gaslike mixture of charged particles that exist at extremely high temperatures. Found mostly in stars and sun

Page 17: 1 states of matter

Plasma•Plasma makes up much of the matter in the Universe

•Ex: sun, stars, lightning bolts, neon/fluorescent bulbs, & auroras

- 3-4 seconds in a microwave - Big ball of plasma
