Fear and Phobia: The Meaning Fear can have a lasting effect on anyone and can grow into a phobia, something that can restrict someone

from doing simple things. For example, say someone is afraid of toes; it could cause them dyer fear to even look at them. It’s a terrible

thing to have, especially when it gets the best of a person and holds them

back from enjoying their lives.

Fear -- A painful emotion or passion excited by the expectation of evil, or the apprehension of impending danger; apprehension; anxiety; solicitude; alarm; dread. 2

And with fear comes a multitude of changes that our own bodies go through. From sweaty palms, to chills down our spine, shaky hands, you heart begins to race, and adrenaline begins to pump through your veins. This is all part of your bodies inner defence mechanism, something that helps you protect yourself in times of need.

Phobia -- An unreasonable sort of fear that can cause avoidance and panic. Phobias are a relatively common type of anxiety disorder. (7)

With phobia comes extreme anxiety and fear towards a certain thing, whether it be spiders, to old people, to even the phobia of phobias themselves. It’s something that affects someone’s life, restricting them from doing everyday things at times.

You may think that fear and the concept of phobia are the same thing, but that is not true. Fear is just a great dislike towards something specific, whereas a phobia is an extreme dislike to something that it affects your body and mind, it restricts you from doing anything someone without that phobia would do. A fear doesn’t cause you to freeze up, scream in horror, and maybe even start crying when you see a spider. So take a look at yourself, are you afraid of anything? Is it just a simple fear or is it a full blown and highly active phobia.
