05.05 Analyzing 20th Century PoetryBy: Chance Harrell
The Fog – by Carl SandburgThe fog comeson little cat feet.
It sits lookingover harbor and cityon silent haunchesand then moves on
How The Fog was influenced by the 20th Century• Using the imagery of the way a fog tends to be creeping
and quietly rolls into an area, it gives a picture in our minds of how the new industries steadily take over what was once an agricultural industry with their smoke stacks appearing in the cities. The fog seems mysterious, unpredictable, maybe even a little scary, as the world changes from what it was to a new world of industrialization. The pitter patter of the little cat feet as if the new world was sneaking up on its prey chasing a mouse.
The Red Wheelbarrow – by William Carlos Williams

beside the whitechickens
How The Red Wheelbarrow was influenced by the 20th Century• During the 20th century segregation and discrimination was
very prevalent. The poem is describing people of other colors as the “red wheel barrow” and how they were depended upon. Their hard work was a huge contributing factor to the labor that was needed to move the country forward, that includes the building of the railroad system. However, they are “glazed with rain water” standing “beside the white chickens”. So even though the white individuals where responsible for the progression of the country, so too where individuals of all colors standing beside one another. The use of colors gives us clear images of the time period that individuals were looked at very differently.
