“Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” by Robert Frost This poem tells a story of a man who is traveling back home through snowy woods on the darkest evening. He stops his horse to admire the snowy scene before him. In the 1920’s, life was focused on wealth which made every man and women work very hard and there would be a payoff for all that hard work. “And miles to go before I sleep” explains he has a long road ahead of him before he can rest, even though he would rather stay there longer, the pull of his obligations tells him he must go home.

“Languages” by Carl Sandburg

This poem is about cultural differences and that it will change over time. It also references all the different languages in our current society. During the 1920’s many immigrants made their way to America hoping for a new start and a new life. The poem talks about the different languages traveling like “a river” going place to place. During this period, America had a lot of mixing of cultures and languages. Everyone had their own languages. “Languages die like rivers” refers to languages that are no longer spoken. Language and culture gradually change.
