Weathering Weathering is the degrading of earth rocks, soils

and their minerals through direct contact with the planet's atmosphere. Weathering occurs in situ, or "with no movement", and then it should not to be confused with erosion, which involves the movement and disintegration of rocks and minerals by agents such as water, ice, wind, and gravity.

Erosion Erosion is the carrying away

or displacement of solids (sediment, soil, rock and other particles) usually by the agents of currents such as, wind, water, or ice by downward or down-slope movement in response to gravity or by living organisms (in the case of bioregion).

Plate tectonics Plate tectonics (from Greek τέκτων,

tektōn "builder" or "mason") describes the large scale motions of Earth's lithosphere. The theory encompasses the older concepts of continental drift, developed during the first half of the 20th century, and seafloor spreading, understood during the 1960s.
