Changing the perspective on EU GDPR

There is usually only one perspective on GDPR: the threat to the business in

terms of additional requirements – but businesses should also consider an

alternative perspective on GDPR: the opportunity it brings.

With GDPR there is a massive incentive and reward for organizations to dive into

their data organization and develop a plan and approach to the new regulative

situation, assessing where the organization is today, what it has already, what it

needs to know and how it needs to deal with it.

With Data being one of the most critical assets of a business, enabling entirely

new insights that can help tailor services and products to customer needs and

expectations in a far better and much more effective way; there simply might be

no other option for an organization other than rapidly gaining understanding of

the logic of a data-driven business model and how this business model can be

successful in the “Age of GDPR”.

Growth opportunity EU GDPR

EU GDPR is a compliance reality for businesses already today. Often the new

GDPR fines are taken as an example of how terrifying this reality will be. But

data-savvy businesses and organization will recognize the incentive of doing

data-business based on EU GDPR.

Implementing GDPR requirements well will enable organizations to build trust

in their ability to protect sensitive personal data - and profit from it. With strong

data management and data governance, business still can establish faster

decision making, faster implementation cycles and stronger accountability.

EU GDPR at-a-glance

The EU General Data Protection Regulation (EU GDPR) will be the

mandatory data protection framework for businesses of all industries

and all sizes in the EU starting May 2018. Without any further

legislative action needed in the Member States, EU GDPR will unify

the already existing national data protection regulations and will

define European Data Privacy at a new and extended level.

With penalties of up to EUR 20mio or 4% of annual global turnover

for infringements of data privacy rules, EU GDPR not only sets new

fiscal risk measures but does so by adding a de-facto global scope

for the exercise of its framework to companies doing business in the

European Union.

EU GDPR introduces far-reaching new obligations for businesses

acquiring, storing and analyzing personal data on technical and

organizational levels. Businesses might be required to appoint a

so-called Data Protection Officer, implement a dedicated Data

Privacy Framework and must report data breaches without delay to

the respective national authorities.

Under EU GDPR legislation businesses will need to guarantee people

much wider levels of access to the data held by the organization and

are obliged to implement the newly defined “Right to be Forgotten”.

More than EU GDPR compliance: data-driven business success

In analyzing data privacy and data protection mechanisms at businesses and

organizations we often find the data governance and data management

aspects of the business being separated from the data operations side.

To enable a data-driven business success the two functions should be united

and function closely together to enable organizations to succeed on EU GDPR

and to utilize the potential that is related to the correct and compliant use of

personal data. On the one side business need to guarantee confidentiality and

privacy of personal and sensitive data and on the other side the utilization of

the data should be possible without infringing the legal framework. Businesses

should develop a clear vision on data, determine its approach to data

governance in line with the EU GDPR requirements. Making this well will lead to

a significant step forward in the data maturity of the business.
