Brief Outline

• The film is about a young boy called zain who is going to be starting his first day at school. He is very excited as he is quite confident that he will mix in quite quick. Zain arrives at school where he meets a boy called Michael they both become friends, they then both walk into class and sit together. Once the lesson is finished zain and Michael leave the class room suddenly they are both stopped by two older Asian boys, the boys question zain and ask him why he is hanging around with a white boy. They then say to zain that he has to hang around with them as he is an Asian. Zain is now in a dilemma, where he will have to make a decision which will set his future in this school.

How our film follows Todorovs narrative theory

• Our film follows the Todorov narrative theory as it goes threw all the stages that are explained through the narrative theory.

o State of equilibrium – Zain is looking forward to his first day at school and meeting new people.

o Disruption of the equilibrium – Kids of an older age from the same ethnic group as Zain do not agree with his choices of friends.

o Recognition that their has been a disruption – Zain is threatened and told by the older group of boys to hang around with them.

o Attempt to repair the disruption – Zain must either choose to hang around with the Asian boys or with Michael

o Reinstatement of the equilibrium – Zain ends up making the decision to befriend Michael as it is his own choice with who he wants to be friends with.

Binary Opposition

• In our movie binary opposition is represented through both of our characters. How it is represented through our main character zain is that he is from a tolerant society so he does not have any problem mixing in with people from different races. • Whereas the Asian group represent a group of people

from a intolerant society, this means that they do have problems hanging around with people from different races.

How our film differs

• The reason why our film is different from other films is because we are showing that racism also occurs between people of the same ethnicity rather than between people who are from different races and religions.
