INTRODUCTION

Tanzania Online is a gateway to information on development issues in Tanzania

It is a UNDP/UN, Government of Tanzania and Economic and Social Research Foundation (ESRF) initiative

What is the problem?

A lot of information is produced but not accessed Problem of accessing Research and key documents Lack of willingness to share information, more

especially on electronic format During the preparation of TAS the need for Information

coordination was felt The UN Office came up with the idea of Tanzania Online

and offered funding. ESRF was selected as the implementing agency.

OBJECTIVES

To provide an interactive facility for easy access to a comprehensive set of documents about development in Tanzania including:

Research findings National policies, strategies and reports analytic work about priorities in development and progress

towards poverty reduction and other development targets.

What has been achieved..cont

Increased global access to locally generated documents

Enhanced knowledge sharing among stakeholders

More than 8,000 documents are in the database

More than 15,000 hits are registered daily

More than 14,000 have subscribed to the database

Tzonline hosts the National website www.tanzania.go.tz

Who benefit with our services?

Tanzania Online focus on content is National but usage not limited to Tanzania

Tanzania online serves the needs of: Government ministries/ Departments/

Agencies Donor community Academic and research Institutions Individual researchers and consultants Private sector and Overseas users

INFORMATION DISSEMINATION

Free via the Internet at www.tzonline.org any one with internet connection can access and download information in PDF format

New Postings are e-mailed monthly to more than 14,000 subscribers

“Highlights” on key issues that have occurred have been appearing on the home page

Current Awareness lists are posted to users with no internet and e-mail access

PUBLICITY

Several measures have been taken to promote the website television and newspapers Promotional materials such as T-shirts,

Brochures, Stickers, Pens and seasons cards are distributed to various stakeholders

Challenges we face

Most of the documents are collected in hard copy, as a result processing them takes longer The culture of keeping and volunteering to have documents put online is still not developed. Research culture is shifting towards electronic sources but gradually. The service has to continue to be supplied on a promotional and public service basis.
