From Smallholder Challenge to Agritech Solution The Start‐Up Nation takes on Smallholder Farming
Bringing Smallholder Technologies to Market
www.skyquestt.comWorldwide, Agriculture Accounts for...
www.skyquestt.comFactsheet: Present
• According to FAO*
 > 500 mn smallholder family farms worldwide
Produces 80% of the world’s food
Cultivating over 96% of the total agricultural land
 > 2 bn people depend on them for their livelihood
• Over 70% of the food insecure population in developing countries
live in rural areas
• The average smallholder cultivates
less than one hectare of arable land
Consumes > 65% of total production within the household.
Millennium Development goal is compromised…….
*UN Food and Agriculture Organization
www.skyquestt.comFactsheet: Future
• According to FAO expected growth by
2050*
 World Population ‐ 9.6 billion
 Per Capita Income ‐ 1.8‐fold
• Resulting into increase in agricultural
production to feed everyone
 60% overall
 100% in developing countries
• More food will have to be produced in the
next 50 years compared to the past 10,000. Image Courtesy: Feed the future
www.skyquestt.comMajor Challenges
Smallholder Farmers face diverse constrains related to production & market.
• Production Level constrains
– Declining Land – Labor ratio
– Stagnant food crop productivity due to low input use
limited irrigation, low fertilizer application, use of recycled seeds, no adoption of
technology
– Lack of sufficient support services including but not limited to skills
needed to enter lucrative markets
– Poor infrastructure
• Poor roads, electricity,
• Access to production and market information
• Extension that focuses only on production and NOT on storage, marketing and value
addition
www.skyquestt.comMajor Challenges
• Market level Constrains
– Poor functioning of inputs market
– Inputs Markets fail for majority of smallholder
farmers
• Credit
• Information
• Technical Advice
• Insurance
– Poorly integrated into better paying output markets
– Market failure caused by high transaction costs of
doing business in both input and output markets

With increase in demandingconsumers & concerns aboutfood safety
Smallholder farmers areunable to enter high‐valuemarkets due to low quantity& poor quality
www.skyquestt.comThe Agricultural treadmill
• IAASTD* describes development model of industrialized nations as the “agricultural treadmill”.
• Based on technological boosts achieved through • mechanization, • plant breeding for high‐yielding varieties,
• the use of agrochemicals and• genetic engineering, others.

ADOPTION OF TECHNOLOGY
www.skyquestt.comBio‐Nano Technology ‐ Increasing Yield • Non‐synthetic, non‐polluting, non‐contaminable, free from chemicals &
carcinogens• Increase plant’s health, vigorous, strength and makes it disease free.• Prevents crop failure under un‐favorable climatic/environmental conditions• Certified as organic inputs under standards of Govt. of India) and USDA• Zero contribution to emission of greenhouse gases• Input Saving:
– 15 to 25% seeds– 75 to 100% Fertilizers– 30 to 40% Pesticides– 100% Growth hormones– 100% Micro‐nutrients– 50 to 60%Water
• Cost‐effective – affordable by smallholder farmers• Suitable for all every geographical situation, all types of soil, botanical plant,
every farming condition, every climatic zone, and all categories of farmers(Small, medium & large)

Applications, Country of origin Description
e‐Choupal, India http://www.echoupal.com
• Designed to provide physicaltransmission capabilities, for fragmentedfarms, weak infrastructure & theinvolvement of numerous intermediaries, aggregation, logistics, counter‐party risk& bridge financing
CropLife; Africa and Middle Easthttp://www.croplifeafrica.org/
• CropLife is testing a system in Uganda to validate that agro‐inputs are genuine (not fakes).
AgriNet Uganda Ltd; Ugandahttp://www.agrinetug.net
• The company works with real‐timemarkets and links value chain players tomarketing information, niche markets, market development & agribusinessdevelopment services on mobile phone, information boards and e‐mails.
www.skyquestt.comAvaaj Otalo
• Service for farmers to access relevant &timely agricultural information over thephone.
• By dialing a phone number & navigatingthrough simple audio prompts– Farmers can record, browse, & respond
to agricultural Q/A.– Announcement board of headline‐likesnippets
– Radio archive to listen to past episodes
• Avaaj Otalo led to the founding ofAwaaz.De (literally, ʺgive voiceʺ), a companyin India that provides a hosted solution fordeploying voice‐based social media.

ENGAGEMENT MODELS WITH SMALLHOLDER FARMERS
www.skyquestt.comLinking small‐scale producers to formal markets:Chain‐wide collaboration & innovation • Chain‐wide collaboration, with shared goals on developing sustainable
commercial trading relationships, with fair returns agreed by all actors, lies
at the heart of the approach.
• Close collaboration is particularly vital when perishable commodities are
involved, which require traceability and management of food safety risks.
• Collaboration can also stimulate innovation between actors in the chain as
they grow to understand their interdependencies and adapt to changing
markets.
• FOR EXAMPLE, in Ghana, Unilever buys a fruit from the Allanblackia
tree for oil production, but the length of time needed for the seeds to
germinate was causing supply constraints. By listening to farmers,
Unilever’s supplier, Novel Corporation, has discovered two innovations
that have been combined to reduce germination time.

HOW DOES THE FUTURE LOOK LIKE?
www.skyquestt.comTop predictions for life, 100 years from nowThree predictions related to today’s sessions:
Oceans will be extensively farmed and not just for fish• Likelihood 10/10.We will need to feed 10 billion people and nature canʹt keep up with demand,
so we will need much more ocean farming for fish. But algae farming is also on the way forrenewable energy, and maybe even for growth of feedstock (raw materials) or resourceextraction via GM seaweed or algae.
Deserts will become tropical forests• Likelihood 7/10. Desert greening is progressing, hence possible.
We will be able to control the weather• Likelihood 8/10. There are already some weather control technology for mediating tornadoes,
making it rain and so on, and thanks to climate change concerns, a huge amount of knowledge isbeing gleaned on how weather works. The weather change technology wonʹt necessarily be cheapenough to use routinely and is more likely to be used to avoid severe damage in key areas.
