• Abstaining from Haram (unlawful) and benefiting from

the Halal (lawful) income is as much necessary for the

Muslim as the observance of Salah and payment of

Zakah.

• Islam has enjoined its followers to only earn and benefit

from Halal things.

• “It is obligatory on every Muslim to seek what is Halal”

(Majma Az-Zawaid, 10:291)

• The effort to earn a living is not only against

spirituality, it is a religious obligation.

• But this earning must be through halal means.

• Our obligation is not just to make money but to make

halal money.

• Halal money or halal earning (lawful) means that we

seek or get the money from allowed or permitted

sources such as working, do business and others.

• But, we must remember that not all business or jobs

are lawful in Islamic perspective.

Page 4: SEEKING HALAL EARNING IN ISLAM

•For example, business that involve cheating, gambling,

riba and prostitution are unlawful.

•All this effort for halal earning should not eclipse our

primary religious obligations and should not make us miss

our Salat or Haj for example.

WHY MUST SEEK FOR HALAL EARNING?

Earning Halal livelihood is a command of Allah and the responsibility

of every man. Hazrath Anas (r.a) reports that Rasulullah (SAW) has

said: “It is a bounded duty upon every Muslim to earn a Halal

livelihood.

Halal earning saves one from begging, consuming Haram and

doubtful things which is are truly harmful.

There are hadith have been given explaining how one should

conduct oneself while seeking a Halal livelihood and regarding the

importance of doing business and trade in accordance to the syariah.

We see that Hazrat Umar (ra) would not allow a person to do

business until he had learnt the Islamic manners and

etiquette of running a business. Thus, it is also essentials that

we too, learn the correct method of dealing, trade and that of

running a business.

While doing business, one should be honest, as this will bring

blessings in the trade. Besides, one should apply good

conduct and also be lenient. Never should one be harsh or

rude. Also, avoid swearing oaths excessively when selling.

We must also realize that earning is only a necessity and not

one’s object. Therefore, the business should not make one

unmindful of Allah nor should it distract us from his

remembrance.

The Muslim can earn his livelihood through agriculture, trade

or industry or by any profession or employment as long as it

does not involve doing, supporting and propagating anything

haram.

Agriculture

• In the Quran, Allah SWT mentions the principles required for

the pursuit of agriculture.

• Allah has spread out the earth and made it suitable and

fertile for cultivation and production.

• Allah SWT also provided water in abundance and send it

down as rain and makes it flow in streams to revive the earth.

Profession and industries

• Islam has prohibited certain profession and industries to

its followers because they are harmful to the beliefs,

morals, honor or good manner to the society.

• Prostitution, for example is a legal in many countries of

the West. Permit and licenses are issued to those who

ply this trade, and prostitutes enjoy rights similar to

other professionals. Islam absolutely reject and

condemns this practice, and forbids any female, free or

slave to earn money by selling her sexuality.

IS BEG OR CHARITY ALLOWED?

Not permissible for Muslim to depend on charity while he

is able to earn what is sufficient for his own and his family’s

need through his own efforts.

The Prophet made it haram (unlawful) for the Muslim to

beg from others without dire necessity thus losing his

honor and his dignity.

Prophet said “He who beg without need is like a person

holdings a burning coal in his hand”.

Page 12: SEEKING HALAL EARNING IN ISLAM

By such strong admonition, the Prophet intended to

train the Muslim to safeguard his dignity, to develop self-

reliance and to be far-removed from dependence on

others.

“It is better that a person should take rope and bring a

bundle of wood on his back to sell so that Allah may

preserve his honor, than that he should beg from people

whether they give to him or refuse him”. (Reported by al-

Bukhari and Muslim)

THE EFFECTS OF HARAM WEALTH

Allah sends calamities over the person receiving wealth through

Haram means and thus all his wealth is destroys. This fact has

been clearly pointed out in the Holy Qur’an. It says, ‘Allah

destroys Riba and nourishes charities. And Allah does not like

any sinful disbeliever’.

Another way of decrease in such a wealth is that the person will

not be able to secure a life of peace in this world. That is why,

nowadays, people have abundance of wealth and they are

reveling in the money but they are totally deprived of inner

peace and bliss of mind, which they may otherwise experience if

their wealth was earned by lawful means.

Page 14: SEEKING HALAL EARNING IN ISLAM

Besides, it is possible that the wealth or property of a

person dealing in interest may not ruin him outwardly

that can be seen by men, but this is quite certain that its

benefits, utilities, and blessings will go away.

CONCLUSION

o We should keep ourselves away from Haram for earning the

money like interest, fraud, selling something by lying. We

should remember if we will use Halal means of earning it will

bring Barakah in our wealth and even less income will become

enough for us.

o We should also remember that this world is not forever and

the wealth will not go with us. However our good deeds

including using Halal means of earning will benefit us even in

hereafter. May Allah SWT help us all to use Halal Means of

earning and avoid the Haram.
