DESCRIPTION
* Are you in the midst of going through a formal evaluation and procurement process to purchase a DITA/XML content management system? * Do you have a small group and not much budget to invest in technology? * Do you have some users that only need occasional access to a system? * Do you have “peak periods” with heavy production workloads? What if you could have a complete XML-based end-to-end solution for managing and producing multilingual content...for about the same price as you pay for your departmental phone bill?“Software as a Service (SaaS)” is quickly becoming the preferred approach for many organizations to get access to technology that was previously difficult or impossible to afford for smaller/midsize businesses. This session will describe a number of successful implementations of the DocZone DITA CMS, translation, and single source publishing environment across a number of different industries. This session will describe a number of successful implementations of the DocZone DITA CMS, translation, and single source publishing environment across a number of different industries.Publishing organizations have long recognized the value of migrating content to XML to attain the benefits of content reuse, reduced localization costs, and single-source publishing. But, many of these organizations have never been able to justify the high cost and long implementation cycles required to install an in-house XML content management solution.Recently, a new alternative has emerged—the “Software as a Service (SaaS)” model, which offers a hosted XML content management environment on a subscription basis. According to leading research firm InfoTrends, over 40% of their survey respondents would either “prefer” or “definitely consider” a hosted content management solution. This seminar will highlight the following topics: * Critical success factors for evaluating XML content management solutions * Comparison of the differences between a traditional “in-house” purchased CMS business model vs. a SaaS subscription-based business model * New pricing models for SaaS solutions in a Web 2.0 world * “Real life” case studies of successful DocZone SaaS implementations across a number of industries

Why doesn't everybody already have it? High cost
• Full solution typically has required the purchase of multiple tools from multiple vendors
• Authoring tool, CMS, publishing tool, help authoring tool, translation tools, etc. (each with high-cost maintenance)

Long time to fully deploy into production
• Custom integration often required to make all of the components work together in a way that meets customer-specific requirements
• Often requires a year or more to reach full production
• Integration services can cost as much (or more than) the cost of the software components
• Takes longer to achieve ROI

Making the business case for an XML CMS Cost Avoidance (The 4 “R's”)
• Reuse content at the component level
• Repurpose content to multiple output formats
• Review process can be streamlined and automated
• Reduce translation costs dramatically!

Increase Revenues!
• Derivative products can be easily spun off by creating new “collections” of content objects
• Personalized delivery based on end-user attributes
• New delivery platforms can easily be launched (e.g., PDA, mobile phone, e-book, etc.)
• Difficult to quantify up front, but the value? Priceless!

The SaaS business model greatly reduces your risk!
Conventional vendor:
Charge customers most or all of the money at time of purchase, before system
is even installed
Customer implements system (often with an integrator)
Charge 18-20% annually for support
No vendor accountability for failure
SaaS Vendor: Vendor configures system (minimal customization)
Monthly/annual license payments do not start until system is “production-
ready”
Penalties to vendor if SLA metrics are not met One vendor supports entire end-to-end environment
“This cultural difference consistently trips up conventional vendors when they try to adopt the on-demand model!” (Phil Wainewright, zdNet)
