Mobile Payments: a Shifting landscape - A Future in which Cash is Mobile

The popularity of mobile payment methods through smartphones is increasing. The amount of

mobile payment transactions is increasing at an annual rate of 40% - 60%. In 2009, there

were 73 million mobile payment users, the amount of users doubled 2011 and in 2016 these

figures will have exploded to 448 million global mobile payment users.

The ways in which this mobile revolution affects the different market in the various regions is

influenced by the internet-, banking- and mobile penetration. While unbanked developing

markets with a high mobile penetration will see mobile payments as an alternative for absent

financial services, urban smartphone user in developed regions with a high banking

penetration will be attracted to the comfort of additional services and trendy gadgets, offered

by mobile payment solutions.

Notwithstanding these regional differences, mobile users worldwide, express the greatest trust

in mobile payment solutions which are driven by financial institutions. Risk of Fraud and

cybercrime, being the greatest concern of smartphone users who are interested in m-payment

solution, the perception is that banks and card schemes are most experienced in preventing

financial crime.

Giant retailers form partnerships with card schemes and mobile operators. At the same time,

young innovators develop new m-payment methods, small start-ups, which attract

experienced investors, with a keen eye for potential success.

These innovative start-ups can become serious competition for those industry giants, who

often miss the agility and flexibility to adapt to changing trends in fluctuating markets. In

order to be successful, both industry giants and small innovative start-ups, will have to

analyze the shift in local payment landscapes in terms of the needs, concerns and

expectations of both urban and rural consumers within the different regions.

The Mobile Payment landscape is shifting. This White Paper explores regional

developments, local preferences, trends and technological innovations which are as

challenging as they are promising for those stakeholders who grab the momentum.
