Merchant banks are primarily involved in international finance and providing financial services to multinational corporations doing business overseas. These banks are able to facilitate international transactions in part because of their experience with the associated legal and regulatory issues.

BANKING However, unlike an investment bank, which may perform

some of the same services, merchant banks don’t provide routine banking services to the public. 

While both merchant and investment banks offer merger and acquisition assistance as well as investment research to their clients, merchant banks are recognized for offering creative forms of financing to companies not big enough to raise funds through an initial public offering (IPO). Investment banks, by comparison, generally serve large corporations who have the financial means and market clout to register securities as required and sell them to the public.
