Diopter

The diopter is the magnifyer in your viewfinder Generally, you have an adjustment scroll wheel to

adjust to your eyesight To adjust your diopter scroll the wheel until the

autofocus points look sharp

Manual Focus

Make sure your camera’s lens is set to MF(manual focus) by flipping the switch on your lens.

Turn the focus ring until the image looks sharp The focus ring position varies per lens Sometimes it is on the very end of the lens and sometimes it is

further up the barrel

AutoFocus

Make sure that your lens is set to AF (autofocus) using the switch on your camera’s lens

Modes One shot-for still subjects. Focuses once per frame AI Servo-for moving objects. It tries to move the focus along

with your moving subject. AI Focus-switches from one shot to AI servo when the camera

senses that your subject is moving

Find these modes in your menu or use your quick key on the cross keys

One-Shot AF

Push your shutter release button halfway down The point being focused on flashes red shortly and

the focus confirmation lights flashes also If the confirmation light blinks, the camera cannot

focus and the camera will not allow you to take the picture

AI Servo

You hold the shutter release halfway down and hold to continuously focus on your subject even as the subject moves

As the subject moves forward and back the focus will automatically adjust

If the subject falls out of the center autofocus point, the focus will continue to move with your subject as long as it is still in one of the autofocus points

AI Focus

Your camera will automatically change from one shot to AI servo and back again as it senses a still or moving subject

Selecting an Autofocus Point

Press the autofocus point selector button

Use your cross keys to select your point Press set to toggle between center point and auto

point selection

To exit press the AF point selector key again or press the shutter release halfway down

For automatic AF point selection get all the points highlighted in red

For manual AF point selection select the point you wish to use

AF Assist Beam

When you are shooting in a dark situation the flash will pop up and fire a short burst of little flashes to give your lens enough light to focus with

Focus Lock

Select the focus point you desire Point this point at your subject to focus Keep holding down the shutter release and

recompose your image as you wish This will not work of you are in AI Servo mode or AI

Focus mode

When Autofocus Fails

Change to manual focus

Mirror Lock Up

When in low lighting situations or using telephoto lenses you may want to lock your mirror up to keep the vibrations down during exposure

To do this go into your menu, custom functions, and enable mirror lock up

Press the shutter release once to lock mirror up Press the shutter release again to take the picture Do not point your camera at the sun during mirror

lock up, this can damage your sensor
