HISTORY

• In 1736, coffee seeds were taken to Popayán and planted in a local monastery. It was only in 1835 that saw the first commercial production of coffee. Records show that the first 60 kg of coffee were exported from Colombia at the time. The first coffee crops grown in the western part of the country, "The Santanderes".

INTRODUCTION

• Colombia currently exports about 560,000 tons a year, which account for approximately 85% of its production. The main international stock negotiating of this product is New York.

MAIN COFFEE BUYERS

• United States, Germany and Japan are the main buyers of green coffee.

• Followed in order of importance by Canada, Belgium and Luxembourg, Holland (Netherlands), France, Sweden, Spain, Italy and the UK.

REQUIREMENTS

•The exporter must be registered as an exporter of processed coffee and coffee processing plant be authorized to process coffee bound for export, all with the National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia.
