The baker at your local bakery has lost his recipe for his gingerbread house that he puts in his store window every holiday season. The baker needs your help! You will take

the role of the baker and build his gingerbread house so that his store looks bright and cheery. By helping the baker, you

will not only determine what goes into making a gingerbread house you, but you will also help keep the holiday spirit

alive!

The baker needs you help! It is your job to build his annual holiday gingerbread house for him. You will do this by:

Researching a good recipe online;Gathering all the ingredients from the class pantry;Building the house;Creating a new recipe, graph, and PowerPoint presentation about your gingerbread house;Saving holiday cheer!

To help the baker you must build his gingerbread house for him. Follow these steps and you will ensure holiday cheer for all who’s near.

1.First you'll be assigned to a team of 4 students.2.Together, you will research gingerbread house recipes online. You may go to websites like:

1. http://allrecipes.com/ 2. http://www.foodnetwork.com/3. http://www.google.com/

•Pick one recipe, then retype it into a word document so the baker will have a new gingerbread house recipe.•Your group is now ready to build your gingerbread house. Take three pictures of your gingerbread house as you work; a before, middle, and after picture.•Once your gingerbread house is finished, create a PowerPoint with the pictures you took.

1. You must have a title2. You must use all three pictures your group took and title them with a

caption.3. You must conclude the PowerPoint with one sentence from each

student on whether you liked, disliked, or were neutral to this activity.1.Finally, your group will create a pie graph about the data from your PowerPoint. You will calculate the percentages of who either liked, disliked, or was neutral to the activity. (For example: 2 people liked it (50%); 1 person didn’t like it (25%); and 1 person was neutral (25%)).

This lesson was developed to facilitate students science skills. The lesson incorporates a modified scientific method that is age appropriate for the students. It challenges students to research, test, and analyze data in a fun, creative way.

This lesson is about a having students research a gingerbread house recipe, build it, and analyze and compile their data about it. They will have to work together to complete it, as it is a lot of work. Teachers should challenge their students to be creative and have fun.

This lesson is anchored in third science and involves math to a lesser extent. This lesson could be easily simplified or extended depending on where developmentally the learner is. For example, to simplify the activity, students would only build a gingerbread house with the help of the teacher. To extend it, the students could do the full scientific method instead of the modified version created for this activity.

Prior to learning this lesson, the learners will need to know what a gingerbread house is. If students have never seen one, the teacher may show pictures to them or bring in an example. In addition, students must know how to use Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, and Word. Teaching this would take more time, thus an additional activity may need to be created in order to teach it.

Students will learn many things from doing this activity. Science and math will both be addressed in addition to things like problem solving, teamwork, and computer skills. The following standards are addessed:
