Year9ProductDesign-Introduction

PURPOSEThepurposeofthisproject istodesignandcreateaproductwithanenduser inmind.Theenduser will be your client – this may be yourself, another student, a teacher or someone fromoutsidetheschool.

STATEMENTOFINQUIRYStudentswillunderstandthatinordertodesignandcreateaproduct,certainprocessesmustbeundertaken through an inquiry into theMYP design cycle and how each part are implementedduringtheproductdesignprocesses.

FASHIONSHOW/EXHIBITIONYourfinalproductdesignwillbepartofafashionshowattheendoftheschoolyear.Ifyoudonotwishtomodeltheproductyourself,youwillberesponsibleforfindingamodelforyourproduct.YourpresentationandproductwillalsobedisplayedduringtheYear9Graduation.

PRODUCTDESIGNPROCESSESTheproductdesignprocessistheapplicationofdesignthinkingthatinvolvestheuseofstrategiesforunderstandingdesignneedsandopportunities,visualisingandgeneratingcreativeandinnovativeideas,planning,andanalysingandevaluatingtheideasthatbestmeetthecriteria.Theuseofcreativeandcriticalthinkingtechniquesenablesstudentstodevelop,articulate,analyseandreflectontheproductdesignprocess.Considerationofeconomic,environmentalandsocialimpactsthatresultfromdesignedsolutionsarecoretodesignthinkingandtheproductdesignprocess.Theproductdesignprocesshasfourstages(SeeMYPDesignCycle)

PRODUCTDESIGNFACTORSThefollowingproductdesignfactorsandparametersareintegraltoframingproductdesign.Thesefactorsinfluencethedesignofaproduct.Somewillbeincludedinadesignbriefandmayalsobeusedinproductevaluation.Inthefollowingtable,thefactorshavebeenplacedintobroadcategories,withparametersoverlappingandinterconnecting,dependingontheindividualcontext.Productdesignfactors ParametersPurpose,functionandcontext

Includesthereasonorneedforaproduct,inthecontextandenvironmentofitsuse.Thisincludesitsoperation,performance,reliabilityandquality.Theprimaryfunctionandsecondaryfunctionsthatsupportitsuseareconsidered.

User-centereddesign End-user/s’problemsorneedsidentifiedtoimprovewellbeingand/orqualityoflife.Inresponsetotheseneeds,considerationsincludecultureandreligion,age,economicstatus,emotionalandsensoryappeal,universaldesign,socialandphysicalneeds,fashionandtrends.Safety,accessibility,comfort,ergonomicsandanthropometricdatashouldalsobeconsidered.

Innovationandcreativity Innovationrequiresacreativeapproachtodevelopneworimprovedsolutionstounsolvedproblemsandopportunities.Thisinvolvesinvention,improvement,modification,incrementalprogress,experimentationandpushingtheboundaries.Opportunitiesareidentifiedfromresearchanddevelopment,end-user/sfeedback,newideasandknowledge,newmaterialsandemergingtechnologies.

Visual,tactileandaesthetic Relatetotheproduct’sform,appearanceandfeel.• Designelementsinclude:point,line,shape,form,texture,tone,colour,

transparency,translucencyandopacity.Naturalforms,patternsandstructuresalongwithgeometryandmathematicscanalsobeemployedtocreateaestheticappeal.

• Designprinciplesof:balance,contrast,repetition,movement/rhythm,pattern,proportion,asymmetry/symmetry,negative/positivespaceandsurfacequalitiesareusedtocombineandarrangethedesignelements.

Sustainability Involvestheconnectionandinteractionbetweenthreepillarsofsustainability:social,economicandenvironmentalsystems.Underpinningfactorsinclude:lifecycleanalysis/assessment(LCA)andlifecyclethinking,emotionalattachment,carbonfootprints,fairtrade,embodiedenergyandwateruse,distribution(productmiles)anduseofrenewableenergyandresources.

Economics–timeandcost Costingaproducttakesintoaccountmaterials,labouranduseofplant(equipmentandmachinery)butmustgivevaluetotheend-user/s.Timemanagementandmaterialavailabilityarecriticalissuestoconsider.

Legalresponsibilities Thelegalaspectsofproductdesignare:intellectualproperty(IP)particularlyPatentsandDesignRegistration;AustralianandInternational(ISO)standards,regulationsandlegislation(includingOH&S).Productsmustbeproducedsafelyandbesafefortheend-user/s.

Materials–characteristicsandproperties

Materialsareselectedforusebasedontheirproperties(theirperformanceandbehaviourbothchemicallyandphysicallyundercertainconditions)andcharacteristics(visiblefeatures).Thesepropertiesandcharacteristicsincludestrength,durability,thermalresistance,hardness,density,rigidity,flexibility,corrosivenessandcompatibilitywithothermaterials.

Technologies–tools,processesandmanufacturingmethods

Conversiontechniques(changingrawmaterialsintousableforms)andproductionprocessesarereliantonandaffectedbyavailabletools,equipment,machines,andexpertise.Suitableandaccuratemethodsareselectedtoperformthefollowing:marking/settingout,cutting/shaping/forming,joining/assembling/constructing,decorating/embellishing/finishing.

JOURNAL• Throughoutthisproductdesignprocess,youwillberequiredtokeeparecordofallyour

planning,research,records,ideas,wonderings,etc.• Youwillrecordallthisinformationinyourjournalbook,whichyoucanusetocreateyour

finalportfolio.• Youmayliketoscanpagesofyourjournaltoincludeinyourportfolio,orretypeyourwork,

oracombinationofboth.• Youwillberequiredtokeepyourjournaluptodateatalltimes.

PORTFOLIOPRESENTATION• For this project, you will produce a presentation style report (using software such as

PowerPoint,KeynoteorPrezi).• Youwillneedto includephotosofyourprogressthroughoutthesemester.Thesewillbe

uploadedontoSeeSawforlateruse.• Use the following headings/sections to structure your presentation: Investigating and

Defining,Design,PlanningandManagement,ProductionJournalandEvaluation(basedonyourowncriteria).

PART1:INVESTIGATINGANDDEFININGThissectionwillhavethefollowingsubsections(seedetailsoverleaf):

• ClientProfile:Identifyenduser/client.Establishyourclient’sneedsfortheirintendedproduct(youwillneedtointerviewthem).

• Designbrief:outlineofthecontext,constraintsandconsiderations.• Evaluationcriteria:developmentofthecriteriatoevaluatehowwellthefinishedproduct

satisfiesthedesignbrief.• Research:researchintofactorsrelatedtothedesignbrief,includingmaterialsandprocess

investigations.

PART2:DESIGNINGANDDEVELOPMENTThissectionwillhavethefollowingsubsections(seedetailsoverleaf):

• Visualisations:conceptsketchesanddrawingsofideastomeettheneedsofthedesignbrief.

• Designoptions:presentationofdrawings,selectionandjustificationofthepreferredoption,howthisoptionmeetsthedesignbrief.• You are required to develop at least three design options to choose from. Record

feedbackfromyourclient.• Presentthechosendesignofyourproduct.

• Workingdrawings:drawingsincludingtechnicaldrawings,showingproductspecifications,(i.e.sizesandconstructionmethods)neededforproductionplanning.Thisshouldincludefabricswatches.

PART4:EVALUATINGYouaretodevelopyourownevaluationcriteriafromthedesignbrief.Thesecriteriaareusedtoinformandjustifytheselecteddesignoption,andevaluatethesuccessofthefinishedproductinrelationtosolvingthedesignproblemfortheend-user/s.Youneedto:

• Designtestingmethods• Evaluatethesuccessoftheproduct,includingqualityandsustainability• Explainhowtheproductcouldbeimproved• Explainhowsatisfiedyourclientiswiththeproduct(review)

• Name• Age• Gender• Photoofclient• Contactdetails• Occupation• Personality• Fashionsense• Colouring• Coloursthatmaycomplimenttheircolouring• Ethicalorsocialconcerns• Bodymeasurements:chest,waist,hips,skirtlength,outseam,armlength.

Createinterviewquestionsyoucanaskyourclientduringyourconsultation.Theanswerstothesewillhelpdetermineyourbrief.Someexamplesinclude:

• Whatistheintendedpurposeoftheproduct?• Willitbeusedforotheroccasions?• Whowillusetheproduct?• Willotherpeopleusethegarment?• Isthisaformalorcasualoccasion?• Whatareyourpreferencesregardingsize,colour,comfort?• Howwillyoumaintainandstoretheproduct?• Doyouwantthegarmenttobehighlyfashionable,classicalorcostumestyle?• Doyouhaveacolourschemeinmind?• Issustainabilityanimportantissueforyouinregardtoitsdisposalorre-use?

Part1.2:DesignBriefBasedonyourinterviewwithyourclient,youcannowcreateyourdesignbriefspecifications.Yourdesignbriefshouldoutlineofthecontext,constraintsandconsiderationsofyourproductdesign.Usetheinformationyougainedduringyourconsultationtofillinthechartonthenextpage.Youwillneedtoalsocreateachartwiththefollowinginformation:

• Outlineofthecontext(fromyourdesignweb)–includeprimaryandsecondaryfunctions.• Informationabouttheuser(relevanttothedesignoftheproduct,e.g.size,colour).• Constraintsandconsiderations–includingbudgetandtime.

Part1.3:DevelopingYourEvaluationCriteriaEvaluationcriteriaforyourproductdesignshouldcomefromyourdesignbrief,particularlytheconstraintsandconsiderations.Youneedtocoverfunctionality,aesthetics,materialrequirements,qualityandclientsatisfaction.Includeonecriterionfordesignandplanning,andatleastfivecriteriaforproductionandthefinishedproduct.Foreachcriterion,youneedtowrite:

Part2.1:VisualisationsConceptsketchesanddrawingsofideastomeettheneedsofthedesignbrief.Includeamoodboardofcoloursandfashionfoundontheweborinmagazinesetc.Visualisationsaresketchesandmodelsthatyoucarryouttoexploreyourideasforyourproductdesign.Itisimportanttodothissoyoudon’tloseanyofyourgreatideaswhencarryingoutyourresearch.Yourvisulisationscouldbetheentirelook,orjustonesectionofthegarmentyouaredesigning.Thesesketchesdon’tneedtopolished–getyourideasdownquicklywhiletheyarefreshinyourmind.

Part2.2:DesignOptionsDesignoptionsare informativeandaredrawnas ‘presentationdrawings’.Theyneedtobeclearandfullyworkedoutdesignideas.Yourdrawingsshouldgiveanaccuratesenseofwhatyouintendtheproducttolooklike.Itiscrucialtoincludecommentsorannotations.Yourannotationscouldhighlightordescribe:

• Materialsbeingused• Stitching,ifobvious• Foldsanddrapingofthefabric• Anynotionsorcomponentsneeded• Modificationsmadetotheoriginaldesign• Howtheproductfulfilstherequirementsofyourbrief.

Useyourvisualisationsasthebasisfordevelopingyourdesignoptions.Youarerequiredtodevelopatleastthreedesignoptionstochoosefrom.Recordfeedbackfromyourclient.Presentthechosendesignofyourproduct.

Part2.3:WorkingDrawingsDrawingsincludingtechnicaldrawings,showingproductspecifications,(i.e.sizesandconstructionmethods)neededforproductionplanning.Thisshouldincludefabricswatches.Yourworkingdrawingsshouldshowthedetailsofthedesignyouhavechosentomake.Onedrawingshouldbea‘flat’,showingthefrontandbackviewwithallconstructiondetailsclearlydrawn,detailedmeasurementsandinformationprovidedaboutthematerialsandnotionsused.Otherdrawingscanshowstepsinconstructionorenlargeddetails.Ifyouareusingexistingcommercialpatterns,youcanincludediagramsofyouradjustmentstothesepatterns.Includeaphoto/scanofthepatterndesigninyourportfolio.
