Youth Service
Youth Services Reorganisation
2009
Purpose of the Consultation
• To inform you of the proposals and their impact for each community and local youth and community centres
• To answer your questions for clarification
• To inform you of the next stages and how to respond to the proposals
Council Policy June 2009
• To provide a co-ordinated, coherent and integrated 21st century youth provision for all young people of the Island
• To provide sufficient positive things for young people to do
• To provide a variety of welcoming places for young people to go to and to meet in
• To achieve this by restructuring the current youth service; increasing partnership working with schools, the voluntary sector, other agencies and the local community
What we do well
• Effective listening to and engaging with young people
• Active and challenging Youth Council
• Examples of excellent individual youth work and youth projects, as with the effective delivery of the Youth Opportunities and Youth Capital Programme
• Delivery at the community level and matched to community need
Why we need to change
• Changing local and national expectations of youth provision
• Need to provide a more effective range of support from different agencies in meeting the needs of our young people
• Ensure that all partners are contributing to costs and that the Council’s direct budget is at the national median
Current Provision Number of staff sessions per week / number of face to face sessions delivered
Achieved outcome of 16% contact of 13-19 youth population

Why we need to change
• Provide services which meet the needs of all young people, are available full time and look beyond the statutory age range
• We need to provide a better range of positive things for young people to do with provision on Friday and Saturday nights
• We need to provide more alternatives and better quality places for young people to go to and meet in. From schools to café type venues
