Yammer starter kitTips and tricks

Search before you post

Before posting, search for the topic first and explore tags for existing relevant conversations. Use the ‘advanced search’ function to restrict your search to a specific group or timeframe. This will help limit repetitive messages. Use the Yammer FAQs, user guides and video tutorials to help clarify common concerns. Post all questions about Yammer functionality and other tech-nical questions to the ‘Yammer training and support’ group so that others can benefit from the answers given to your question.

Stay away from information overload by customizing your email notification settings, and by setting your Yammer feed to ‘Following’ as default, which only displays posts related to people or topics you follow. You can also stop following conversa-tions and topics that are no longer relevant to you by clicking on the ‘Remove from Inbox’ button in your Inbox.

Make your posts easy to find

- Post in the appropriate group: Make the posts visible to the right audience – posts in the ‘All Company’ feed are often left unanswered because those who could contribute are unaware of the conversation

- One post, one topic: Categorize your posts by using tags and topics so that others can find them. By adding a keyword preceded by a hashtag (eg. #yammer), those who follow the topic will be notified and can join the conversation

- Notify colleagues: Notify those who could help fuel the discussion, answer your questions or refer you to the right subject-matter expert by adding the @name symbol.

Bookmark relevant conversations

Bookmark conversations so that you can revert to them at a later time when it suits you best. Simply click on the ‘More’ button found on every post and visit your profile to view all bookmarks.

Have a clear purpose in mind when starting a group

Thinking of creating a group? Have you searched to see if a similar group already exists? Do you have a clear purpose in mind and are you prepared to manage content to keep conversations lively and surface relevant content? If so, and you want to create a group, please follow the group naming convention to ensure your group is easily searchable.

Keep things open

While groups can be both public and private, keep your groups and messages public when possible so that Yammer stays a truly transparent collaboration platform.

Share your successes with the community

Is Yammer helping you perform better at work? Do you get responses faster than via email, is it easier to manage a project or are you adopting a new way of working that you discovered through Yammer? Your stories can inspire others; please share your examples in the ‘Yammer success’ group or tag your posts with the #yammerworks topic.

Yammer starter kitA few things to keep in mind

Yammer isn’t Facebook

While Yammer has a look and feel similar to Facebook, Yammer is an enterprise social network used to surface relevant information among colleagues. Some of the things you share on Facebook may not be appropriate or relevant for your colleagues on Yammer, where the purpose is to facilitate business-relevant conversations. Please share your thoughts that are not related to work to a specific group designed for that purpose, such as the ‘Just for fun’ group.

Posting in the ‘All Company’ feed

Yammer is shared with all employees in the company - not just your close colleagues. The group functionality in Yammer allows you to share posts with more limited and relevant audiences.

Please be careful when posting in the ‘All Company’ feed. Think of it as sending an email to everyone in ABB. How often have you done this before using Yammer?

Writing style and tonality

Context: Make sure you post in the right group and reply to the right person in threads Format: Keep your messages short; shorter posts are more widely read Tonality: While messages tend to me more conversational and less formal, please keep the tone of your posts constructive and helpful.

Confidentiality and usage policy

When joining the Yammer network, you have to accept the ABB usage policy on Yammer. Please remember that the ABB Code of Conduct applies to Yammer, too.

Yammer is as secure as non-encrypted email. Please do not share confidential client information in Yammer and keep in mind that internal information can sometimes end up being communicated externally.

Need help getting around Yammer?

- If you haven’t done so already, make sure you join the ‚‘Yammer training and support’ group where you can find resources such as user guides and short video tutorials, and where you can ask others for guidance.

- In case of technical difficulties, please send an email to [email protected] and our colleagues will assist you promptly.
