You Waveby Emily Sanford
Come slowly to sit with me on the shorelook out at the horizonthe dazzling motion of waves—
light dapples watercrestsin shimmerings that trick the eye.You wave,
pause, bendfor beach glass, saltwatertumbled, bit of frost.
It seems like the summeryou were here,gleaming.
Waves, one by one, slow,tumultuous and cumulative.Tidal flow—
rising water, I know—you wave.I always know you’re here and feel you go.
DURATION: 5 minsPROGRAM NOTES: You Wave is a piece about memory. Fragmented piano gestures underlie a gently lilting vocal melody, intending to illustrate nostalgic—yet imperfect—images of a unique moment in time. The lulling motion of the tide ebbs and flows in an almost seamless exchange with the feelings of the narrator as they recall this deep, shared personal experience with a special individual.
about the composer
@ekrhammellmusicekrhammell.com
E.K.R. Hammell (Evan) is a Canadian composer, arranger, & music editor in the pursuit of unstoppable forward momentum. A recipient of the Lloyd Carr-Harris Composition prize, his original music and arrangements have been performed by the Canadian Men’s Chorus; Denis Wick Canadian Wind Orchestra; provincial & state honour band ensembles of Saskatchewan, Minnesota & Washington; Trinity Laban Symphonic Winds (UK); PEI Symphony Orchestra; Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra; Exultate Chamber Singers; Sirens; That Choir; Luminos Ensemble; Charlottetown Festival Orchestra; Central Bucks West Choir (Pennsylvania); and the University of Toronto Wind Ensemble, to name just a few.
Originally from Prince Edward Island, Evan is currently based in Toronto, having received aBachelor of Music Composition from the University of Toronto in 2017. Aside from devisingpretentiously abbreviated stage names, his other talents mainly involve playing bass tromboneand being impressively bad at cooking and eye contact.
Evan’s music is currently available through Santa Barbara Music Publishing, J.W. Pepper, St.John’s Music, and his own website at ekrhammell.com.
