Stories welcomeWTVP’s PBS KIDS Writers Contest is open for entries! Beginning January 12, children can submit their stories to the PBS KIDS Writers Contest. WTVP will select local winners and award prizes at a special celebration for winning authors and their families in the WTVP television studio later this spring.
The first place local winners will then be entered into the national contest where a panel of esteemed judges will rank the top 12 entries. National winners will be announced during the summer of 2015 and the win-ning stories will be featured on pbskids.org/writerscontest.
The national winners will receive prizes courtesy of national priz-ing sponsor, Little, Brown Books for Young Readers and PBS. The PBS KIDS Writers Contest is produced by PBS and based on the Reading Rainbow® Young Writers and Illustrators Contest, a concept developed by WNED-TV, Buffalo.
The contest is open to children in kindergarten through third grade. Stories must be the child’s own work and include at least five illustrations to complement the story. To enter the Contest and for more information on rules and resources, parents and teachers are encouraged to visit wtvp.org/contest.

notes from the president & cEoMake new programs, but keep the old“It’s the closest thing to water cooler television as public television gets.” That was Masterpiece executive producer Rebecca Eaton’s reaction to the runaway success of Downton Abbey following its first season.Four years and four seasons later, the show continues to introduce new fans to PBS—part of a strategic move that brought more arts programs, the Think Wednesdays lineup of science programming and younger-appeal fare such as Sherlock. Led by the strength of Downton Abbey and Ken Burns’ The roosevelts (which aired in September 2014), PBS pushed to number 5 among all broadcast and cable networks in the Nielsen ratings for the 2013-2014 TV season. For the first time ever, PBS finished behind only CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox, a five percent increase over the previous ratings season.Obviously, this is great news for us here at WTVP, and it’s spurring us to look at our own productions and content on all of our platforms. We are in exploratory stages on a local companion piece to the Ken Burns presentation cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies (coming in March), and interstitial features to accompany upcoming films on the Vietnam War (starting in
April). I’m excited by these potential collaborations and will look forward to sharing more with you as this content begins to take shape. In this time of new beginnings, I’m also taking time to reflect on my first four months at WTVP. Already during my time with you, we have hosted the only Downstate

roadshow(s) return!Antiques Roadshow hits a homerun with a treasure-filled visit to New York City and its largest sports memorabilia find ever! Still the top-rated ongoing PBS primetime series, Antiques Roadshow’s new 19th season begins with a three-part trip to NYC where highlights include an unpublished Art Spiegel-man book proposal, ca. 1974; a headboard from the set of The God-father, Part II that was purchased for under $25; and an archive of rare photographic baseball cards with a handwritten letter from the 1871-1872 Boston Red Stockings, appraised at $1,000,000. Antiques roadshow airs Mondays at 7 p.m. beginning Jan. 5. vintage episodes follow each Monday at 8 p.m.
Genealogy Roadshow returns with a revamped format and more incredible discoveries that reveal family secrets and connect regular people to their unique histories. Part detective story, part emotional journey, the series combines history and science to uncover fascinating stories of diverse Americans in and around St. Louis, Philadelphia and New Orleans. From descendants of the infamous pirate Blackbeard to heroes of the Holocaust, each individual’s story links to a larger community (and in some cases, national) history, to become part of America’s rich cultural tapestry. Season two of Genealogy road-show premieres tuesday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. and continues every tuesday through Feb. 24.

ultimate restorationsAntiques Roadshow meets This Old House in Ultimate Restorations, an eight-part series featuring the mar-vels of engineering from America’s grand history of ambition and innovation. From the 1880s through World War II, the United States advanced the science of aeronautics, propulsion, navigation and sound with inventions that were both functional and artistic: locomotives, fighter planes, yachts and the world’s largest pipe organ. Sadly, few of these icons from our past remain. Now, eight national heirlooms are rescued from the junkyard and painstakingly restored to their origi-nal glory, offering poignant glimpses of days gone by.
Capping off our Think Wednesday lineup of the best science, engineer-ing and discovery programming, ultimate restorations airs wednesdays at 10 p.m. beginning Jan. 7.
Local audiences will be particularly interested in the Jan. 28 episode, a dramatic restoration of a surviving 1920s Ahrens Fox fire engine from Kansas City. A similar restoration project is underway locally at the Wheels O’ Time Museum in Dunlap with a team that includes many former employees of the Caterpillar Tractor Company and the Heart of Illinois Fire Enthusiasts and Collectors.

Shakespeare uncovered returnsBehind every Shakespeare play there is a story. And in each produc-tion over history, the actors have had unique connections to the scripts and characters making each performance special. Shakespeare uncovered returns with six new episodes that combine history, biography, iconic performances, new analysis and the personal passion of its celebrated hosts — Hugh Bonneville, Christopher Plummer, Morgan Freeman, David Harewood, Kim Cattrall and Joseph Fiennes — to reveal these connections and tell the stories behind the stories of Shakespeare’s greatest plays.
The season opens on Friday, Jan. 30 at 8 p.m. as Hugh Bonnev-ille steps away from Downton Ab-bey to revisit the Open Air Theatre in London’s Regent’s Park. It was there that he started his career—as an understudy for Ralph Fiennes in A Midsummer Night’s Dream—and his love of Shakespeare blossomed. And at 9 p.m., Christopher Plum-mer shares insight into playing the troubled king in Shakespeare’s iconic tragedy, King Lear. The series continues on successive Fridays with Morgan Freeman on The Taming of the Shrew and David Harewood on Othello, and Kim Cat-trall on Antony and Cleopatra and Joseph Fiennes on Romeo and Juliet. The broadcasts will be accompa-nied by a rich website at www.pbs.org/shakespeare-uncovered.

Bill Moyers Says FarewellThe third and final year of Moyers & company comes to an end on January 4 and I am writing to assure you that this time it’s the real deal. You may recall that we had originally raised the funds in 2011 for a two-year series but when I announced last fall that the end was near, viewers by the thousands wrote imploring us to reconsider. My long-time funders came forward with a renewed commitment to a third year of support. How could I say no?
But as the end of the third year approaches, it’s time finally to sign off. I consider myself the luckiest fellow in broadcast journalism for having been a part of public television for over half of my 80 years (my first broadcast was in the fall of 1971 before some of you were born!).
I never expected such a full and satisfying run at work I could love so much, and I am deeply indebted to everyone with whom I have been associated on this long and
rewarding journey. As President Lyndon Johnson’s domestic policy assistant I was “present at the creation” when we held the first meeting at the Office of Education to discuss the potential of “educational television”. The Public Broadcasting Act of l967 became law the year I left the White House to return to journalism. I believe in the mission of public broadcasting as strongly as ever, and if you want to be reminded of its importance, go online and watch the video of the statement President Johnson made when he signed the Act.
With thanks and every best wish to each of you,
Bill Moyers
P.S. With half a million Facebook “friends” and traffic still growing, we will keep billmoyers.com up and running for the indefinite future. It will feature some new content and much of the programming we have done over these many years.

The Art of Collecting
Humans have long felt the urge to collect and organize items from the world around us. This exhibition gives visitors a glimpse into the history of collecting beginning with a recreation of a typical early cabinet of curiosities. Witness examples of natural history collections, ethnographic collections, and fine & folk art collections and investigate how, what, and why we collect today.
