“We like challenges & the latest &
greatest”
1. Health Geeks
Does your wellness program…
• Challenge those that are already healthy to stay that way?
• Provide some advanced health initiatives (rather than just the basics)?
• Leverage healthy employees to inspire others? Expert = Latin for “experience”
Wellness program planners
biggest mistake?
Using logic & facts to educate
• Science is a verifier not a justifier! • Employees decide based on feelings & beliefs Shared values 3-5 X
more important than competence
Journal of Rural Sociology, 2009
Who are the health geeks in your company that can inspire others?

2. Weight Warriors
WHO: Global Burden of Disease Study 2013 The Lancet
Statistics Canada: 2012 Canadian Community Health Survey
Overweight & Obese Canadians ~60% of adults
~32% of kids (age 5-17 years)
Worldwide Overweight & Obese Rising: Adults: 28% increase since 1980
Children: 47% increase since 1980
Weight loss research clearly shows:
nutrition trumps exercise
“You can’t burn off a bad diet”
Many people overestimate how many calories they burn…
30 min Activity Calories Burned for a 150 lb. person
Walking 3 mph 113 calories Elliptical 245 calories Running 5 mph 272 calories Stationary Biking 239 calories Swimming 205 calories Weight lifting 153 calories Cleaning house 102 calories Gardening 136 calories
www.primusweb.com/fitnesspartner/jumpsite/calculat.htm
We underestimate how much
we eat by …_____% ≈ 30%
Does your wellness program… • Support the research that you may be better
off to focus more on nutrition than fitness? • Offer ongoing nutrition support in both group
& individual learning initiatives? • Avoid rewarding with food? • Have a supportive program for catering,
vending machine & offsite camp choices?
Biggest loser contests…
Avoid them!
• Weight loss is easy, sustaining is hard • Weight loss rates vary
– gender, age, height, muscle, how overweight someone is etc.
• Reward healthy habits not pounds • Research shows damage
– biggest loser programs damage metabolism & weight regain likely

Other BIG Nutrition Challenges
Depression, Stress & Anxiety: • leading causes of disability worldwide • emotional eating is one of the largest nutrition
issues we see in our practice influencing health & weight management
Iron Deficiency: • most common nutrient deficiency espec. for women • directly influences concentration/energy if untreated
Does your wellness program… • Offer screening, prevention & treatment
initiatives? • Target nutrition programming & onsite
food choices to support high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high blood sugars, cancer prevention, iron deficiency & emotional eating?

“that is for THEM not me”
“I have more important things to do”
“that is for THEM not me” may actually mean…
“I don’t want to look like I don’t have it all figured out”
Getting senior leaders engaged in wellness initiatives
At the proposal & budget setting phase: 1. Walk the Talk
• Remind them leaders that “walk the talk” have more successful wellness programs
2. Provide Stats • Last years senior leader participation, health data (if
available) & potential cost of an unhealthy leader/ROI 3. Solo Initiatives
• Build in some separate initiatives such as executive retreats & individual coaching for senior leaders
4. Commitment • Ask for clear leader involvement at the approval process

What are attendees looking for in workplace nutrition initiatives?
1. Taste trumps all
2. Price is powerful
3. Convenience is key
4. Nutrition is important
My guess?
“It’s not nutrition until it’s eaten”

Don’t sell health as much as the sizzle
Dr. Jim Painter

2. Eat together
“We think a good culture of food can be the #1 driver of company culture.” “We make food a priority. It’s amazing what eating does to bring people together. Our team feels like a big family, and this is in large part due to the fact that we share most of our meals”
Thumbtack Engineering, San Francisco http://www.thumbtack.com/engineering/food-rules-for-startups/
“Family” Meals
Research shows families that eat together: – Have better nutrient intake & eat less junk food. – Are less likely to have a teen abuse alcohol & drugs,
have a low grade point average, depressive symptoms & become suicidal.
– Are less likely to be overweight & have disordered eating habits.
Your colleagues at work are also a family!
“Eat together” initiatives: • New employees partnered for lunches • Support lunch breaks away from desks • Better lunch rooms:
– family style tables & enough fridge space – better cooking supplies: add toaster ovens & blenders
• “Corporate challenges” – potlucks & cook offs – Recipe contest with prizes: best homemade muffin,
smoothie, soup, 20 minute meal etc. • Lunch swap
– take turns packing lunch for a coworker

3. Don’t fund “fake” food
• Fuel them with REAL FOOD – I.e./ stuff your grandma would recognize that fuels
awesomeness
• Stop offering free pop! – Divert costs of supplying free soda & bottled water to a
healthy snack and catering program • Remove vending machines
– Even the so called “healthier” versions aren’t great
4. Fund REAL food
• Have a dietitian develop a custom healthy catering list of approved vendor options – Train staff involved in ordering food for meetings
• Free/subsidized healthy breakfast (or lunch) program – Daily, weekly, monthly depending on budget – Work with a chef, caterer, healthy delivery service
• Free healthy snacks – Provide daily whole, cut up fresh fruit, raw veggies &
hummus, yogurt, nuts etc.
Most popular employee perks of 2014
includes “good eats” • Dropbox:
– Free juice bar, granola station & made to order stir-fry station
• Ontraport – 2 free daily breakfast choices (including breakfast burritobar) – Free daily lunch (including a salad bar) – free daily “Worksnax” (fresh snack delivery)
• Moz.com – free never ending cereal bar

Want happier employees? Feed them
• 60% say food in the office sign of feeling "valued and appreciated”
• 45% say free lunch would strongly influence decision to accept a job
• 60% say company offered meals would encourage them to eat with their colleagues
• 41% felt best corporate gift was food • 40% say food in the office would reduce stress

Wednesday winter veggie soups – Offer veggie cooking classes – Recipe contests
