Happenings
November 2017
As the winter weather approaches, it is important for drivers to recognize changing conditions
and take appropriate steps to avoid costly damage and down time.
1. WINTER FRONTS—When the outside temperature drops to 30° F, the winter front MUST be in-
stalled on the front of the truck. When the temperature reaches 40° F the winter front MUST be
removed. Leaving it on in warmer temps will cause the engine fan to run and result in lower
MPGs.
2. DEF USAGE—Colder temperatures could increase DEF usage up to 1.5 times. In very cold ar-
eas, it could double normal usage. Please keep this in mind when refueling.
3. FUEL—Try to avoid running your fuel tanks below half in the northern half of the country
(North of Kansas City). Low fuel tanks are more apt to gel up. Also, when coming from the
South into cold temps do not fill the truck or reefer up just prior to hitting the cold since you will
have straight number 2 fuel on board.
4. BRAKES/TIRES—Brake shoes freeze to brake drums when moisture turns to ice. When hooking
up to trailers, make sure all the wheels are turning. Check for skid marks and “feel” for exces-
sive drag. Often times a hammer to the brake shoe will break it loose and you’re on your way
without lost time and expense.
