In 2013, University Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) started a program called Feed the Kids. Its purpose was to provide food to students at Northwestern High School who had children of their own. For the first several months we attempted to request donations of specific food for the bags we put together, and included recipes created by a church member who was a nutritionist. As you might imagine, it was not very successful to get the right food in the right quantities to do this. Then, a miracle! For no reason I am aware of, we decided to order Thanksgiving boxes from SHARE. That event changed my life. One of my first encounters at SHARE was Jaynee Acevedo—although I am not sure
Why I Volunteer At SHAREI knew that was her name. She greeted everyone, was upbeat, enthusiastic and charismatic. And THEN she led the prayer circle to start the food distribution, and I was hooked. Whenever I spoke with her—and after that Thanksgiving, we shifted to just buying value packs for our Feed the Kids program, so I was at SHARE for pickup once a month—she was warm and engaging, and I’d tell her I wanted to come work for her. She’d agree that would be wonderful. Fast forward to Spring 2017, and the continuation of the Feed the Kids program was in doubt. I decided that if I was not coordinating a host sight, I’d vol-unteer at the warehouse. And, since June of this year, I have.
Before June, Jaynee was the face of SHARE, but having worked at the ware-house for going on six months, I now have

met (and worked with) every- o n e —and they are a most remarkable g r o u p of people. From the front office f o l k s who take orders and process paper-work, to the warehouse staff ( w h o will not let me drive a fork l i f t ! ) , to the back office folks who m a k e the food buying decisions and g e t this whole thing done month a f t e r month, I do not believe I have met a harder working, more dedi- c a t e d group of people. They are there in the morning when I arrive, they are t h e r e when I leave in the evening, t h e y are there on Saturdays. And just a bit of perspective—the folks who take orders from over 230 host sites a month, the folks who package and dis-tribute 4500+ value packs a month—the folks who keep all of this food coming and going and smile through it all? Seven full timers, three part timers.
As a volunteer I try to do whatever I am asked. Often it is processing batches of paperwork, or doing data entry for some-thing called ‘detailed reports’, or answering the phone when staff is in meetings. Last month I worked my very first Saturday food distribution, for Thanksgiving. Another eye
opening event of how completely involved the SHARE staff is—I arrived at 5:00 AM and everyone else was already in full swing. Simply amazing. I currently work Tuesdays and Thursdays, Distribution Friday and Market Monday—and would probably be here every day if I could! One often thinks of SHARE volunteers as the folks who help with food packaging and distribution, and that is an entirely different group of dedi-

Do You See What I See?
Not always…
Lord, give us a heavenly perspective on this life. Help us not to be distracted
by the things of this world but to constantly turn our gaze toward You. Help us
to have perspective and to see with clear eyes both the hardships and bless-
ings of our lives. As we reflect on our blessings, help us bless others. Lord,
give us all right perspective on the life we have, a gift from You.

In Memoriam
ELIZABETH ANN GIBSON
1922-2017
On December 5, 2017, our dear Ms. Gibson departed this life quietly at
her home. She was the beloved mother of four children, Leila, Eric, Melva
and the late Marwin.
She began her volunteer service with SHARE on its very first day of Dis-
tribution in April of 1990. Her commitment to SHARE was unwavering
through almost 28 years of service. The most important thing about her
was the size of her heart. She made room for everyone and made certain
that all within her reach were touched by her generous spirit.
A Memorial Celebration of Life will be held at J.B. JENKINS FUNERAL
HOME, 7474 Landover Rd., Hyattsville, MD on Saturday, December 16
at 12:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Disabled American Vet-
erans, P.O. Box 14301 Cincinnati, OH 45250.

SHARE is a SNAP
At SHARE Food Network, families can count on $40-45 worth of healthy groceries once a month, every month, for just $22. This means that families can make their food budget go twice as far without skimping on the quality of or nutrition in their food. While emergency food pantries are a good resource for people in a crunch for food now, SHARE is a wonderful long-term solution to finding healthy, fresh food without breaking the budget. In addition to empowering people to be able to afford their own groceries, SHARE also builds community by connecting people, churches, and organizations with one another. By promoting volunteer service, SHARE encourages people to be active in their communities and build new relationships.
If you want to stretch your budget and save money, SNAP might be a good option for you. To qualify, you must be a U.S. citizen or have at least 5 years of legal residence in the U.S. If you don’t meet either of these requirements, but you have children born in the U.S., you may qualify. Income requirements also apply.

Continued from page 1cated, wonderful folks. But I am blessed to be able to be a week day volunteer, and see the other side of a complicated, impressive process.
And then there is the whole concept of what SHARE stands for—healthy food at reasonable prices. I have been passionate about feeding people for as long as I can remember (maybe because I don’t cook!), and have been involved with a variety of programs to get food to those most in need—including handing out sandwiches in DC in another lifetime. I work with Prince George’s county Help by Phone, subbing at one of the food pantries whenever I am needed, I volunteer at the University of Maryland Good Neighbor Day and often help to sort food that has been donated, and I put in time at Safe Haven, which houses (and feeds) homeless men for the coldest 13 weeks of winter. But SHARE is special. The food options, the attitude of the workers, the extreme personal generosity of the individuals—it is a happy place for me to volunteer and it makes a huge difference in my life.
For a Clean New YearBasic Cleaning Spray:1/2 cup of vinegar
1/2 cup of water
Combine and use to clean counters, windows, microwaves, etc.
*Make it smell fantastic by adding lemons or orange peel to the spray. Let it sit for a couple of days so the vinegar adapts the new scent before using.*
Disinfectant Cleaning Spray:Hydrogen peroxide
Keep this in a dark bottle as the light will break down the solution. It is great for cleaning toilets, cutting boards, glass, basically any surface you want to disinfect. Great to use even on your toothbrushes!’
Floor Cleaner:1/4 cup pf baking soda
1/4 cup of vinegar
1 tablespoon dish soap
2 gallons of hot water
Add the dish soap last so your mop water is not too sudsy. Add a 1/2 cup of borax if you want this to be disinfectant. Mop away! No need to rinse your floors afterwards. Not to be used on natural stone.
All Purpose Scrub:Baking Soda
Splash of vinegar
Scrub with a sponge or rag. Great for showers, oven tops, sinks, counters, etc.
Liquid Laundry Detergent:1/6th of a Fels Naptha Bar
1/4th cup of washing soda
1/2 cup of Borax
large old laundry soap containers to store solution in
Grate the bar of soap and put it in a saucepan. Add 3 cups of water and heat till the soap melts. Add washing soda and borax, stir till dissolved. Pour two cups of water to your container and add the soap mixture. Stir or gently shake. Let the soap sit for 24 hours before use. It will be gel-like and will need to be shaken/stirred prior to use. To wash: use 1/2 cup of detergent per load. It works with cold or hot washes as well as in energy efficient machines. This does not “suds up” like other detergents, but it cleans wonderfully!

HEALTHY RECIPES, FROM PROVIDENCE HOSPITAL’S NUTRITION DEPARTMENT
In August DC Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the launch of “My Health GPS”, a 3-year program to help Medicaid patients receive complete, wrap-around care, especial-ly those with multiple chronic illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. The goal of the program is to help patients actively manage and maintain their health, rather than waiting until they are in crisis and visiting emergency rooms.
The My Health GPS program rewards organizations who demonstrate improved health-care outcomes. Twelve organizations currently participate, including Providence Hos-pital.
The Providence vision is to encourage their patients to visit regularly for appointments, prescriptions, lab work, and nutrition/lifestyle counselling. They give each patient a Value Package from SHARE as a thank you for their visit, which helps their patients save money, eat well, and improve their nutrition. Since September, Providence Hospi-tal has purchased more than 1,300 Value Packages for their clients.
SHARE is a proud partner of Providence Hospital, their creative thinking, and the extra efforts they make to truly reach the community in a meaningful way. We hope you will read and enjoy using the following, healthy recipes.

HEALTHY NEIGHBORS START WITH HEALTHY NEIGHBORHOODS
AND PEOPLE WHO CAREOn Sunday, Ms. Wilson fainted in church. But once she came to, surrounded by her friends, she decided it wasn’t an emergency. So, she went home, and waited until the next day to take the bus to Providence. Almost as soon as she got to Providence, she fainted again. It took three staff members to resuscitate her. As it turns out, Ms. Wilson was suf-fering from severe hypoglycemia and hypothyroidism. The nurses told her that if she had fainted on the bus, she would probably never have made it! Thankfully, Providence is close to where Ms. Wilson lives and works.
Ms. Wilson was admitted to the hospital for two days to monitor her vital signs. Provi-dence helped contact her family and surrounded her with an expert team. In fact, her Patient Navigator stayed by her side every minute until her family arrived. One thing we learned when we talked to Ms. Wilson was that she hadn’t eaten for two days before she was admitted. So, we made sure she received a food package through the SHARE Food Network, and asked her to return next month to continue receiving the monthly food package. Because of our partnership with the SHARE Food Network, Providence can more easily care for the whole person, and the whole community, because we believe healthy neighbors start with healthy neighborhoods and people who care.
We are happy to say that Ms. Wilson is feeling much better. She missed a few days of work, but she was back at church the next Sunday, wearing her favorite hat and smiling for all to see.
