Why i use Apple instead of Linux or Android day-to-day
I am a geek and a hacker, so of course I love open-source, but...
Linux on a PC is a giant mishmash of:- hardware components- Linux kernel- thousands of software packages, hacked together by thousands of programmers- often device drivers made for Windows
Android is a nice idea, but...
- Android OS by Google- Hardware by manufacturers- Everybody uses a different version- Crapware added by the telecoms- Crapware added by manufacturers
Very fragmented!
No ‘architect’ looking at the big picture, at all the pieces, and thinking through how they should work together
What’s the problem?
So many points of failure!
Study all the elements and environment, envision and then plan what can be built with, then ‘just do it’...
It's a problem for me to communicate, living in another country
For example
I love the idea in science-fiction of a universal translator
I saw how expensive it is for conferences to get interpreters to come translate at their events
A researcher just published a paper about the trend of people with more than one native language
Some linguists and philosophers think we will lose a lot if we all speak only English
A start-up started offering telecommunications as a cloud service
There are already communities with millions of young people helping each other practice languages
An new open-source project provides many useful features
Voice-over-IP is booming thanks to the adoption of mobile broadband & smartphones
breaking down language barriers
