Who am I?
• Bloxham School for 7 years (2008 – 2015)
• Studied Maths, Physics and DT at A-level
(BBA respectively)
• Applied to University of Sheffield through
UCAS and got accepted to study

• Engineering Undergraduate Apprentice at AIRBUS (we make planes… mainly)
Type of Apprenticeship:
• Degree Apprenticeship (the most relevant for you)
• 3 year programme (40 months in reality)

• NVQ Level 2 Aerospace and Aviation
A workshop based qualification that will teach you the basics of manufacturing techniques and materials
used in the aerospace industry
• NVQ Level 4 Engineering and Manufacture
A qualification that is based on the experiences you gain throughout your placements in the company, and
demonstrates your ability as an engineer
• BEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering
A full university degree covering a broad selection of subjects applicable to aerospace engineering
• IEng (Incorporated engineer)
An internationally recognised status of competency within the engineering discipline

• 5 days spent in Eskdale in the Lake District in summer 2016
• Intercultural team building (with German and French Apprentices)

Life as an apprentice?
• Tough
• Rewarding
• Real – you’re very much in the ‘real world’
• Still fun!
• Still go out like university students… but have to be up at 7am the next day
• 35 hour working week – with half day Friday
• Get to experience some great trips:
• Le Bourget (Paris air show)
• RIAT (Royal International Air Tattoo)

What do I actually do?
• 35 hour working week (with Flexitime)
• Usually 2 days at University per week / 3 days at Airbus
• Apprentices do placements within the company
• Ranging between 3 and 6 months
• Different disciplines from design, to fatigue and damage tolerance
• There are lots to choose from
• A TDC (technical development contract) is filled out to mark our performance and
attitude etc. within the placement

What do I actually do?
• Completed placements:
• Eco-Flyer
• Wing of Tomorrow (classified)
• A350 FLE Stress
• In-service repairs (major incidents)

The Application Process
• Send off a covering letter, CV and references from work experience if you
can get them!
• Be invited for an Assessment Day:
• Maths A Level Test
• Team Building
• 45 minute Interview (2 on 1)
Try to prepare for this and know what the Company wants to see in you
Follow any advice they give before hand, usually found online
10 places available, but growing every year!
Airbus are reducing their Graduate intake…

Disadvantages?
• 25 days holiday a year (not as bad as it
sounds)
• Can be very stressful fitting in a full time
degree whilst working a full time job
However:
• You have enough money to go on a nice
holiday!
• Is definitely worth it in the end
• Most students get jobs in the summer anyway
