Modi on Sunday to mark theInternational Women’s Day. Three ofthem also received the Nari ShaktiPuraskar from President Ram NathKovind at a function held atRashtrapati Bhavan in the afternoon.

Last week, the PM had tweeted thathe planned to give up his social mediahandlesonTwitter,Instagram,YouTube,and Facebook to women achievers onInternationalWomen’sDay.

Thesevenwomenwerechosenfromdifferent regions, economic and socialstrataofthecountry.Workdonebythemhas also helped create awareness aboutschemes of the Modi government, par-ticularlySwachhBharatAbhiyanandJalJeevanMission for water conservation.The videos these seven women sharedonsocialmediawereviewedwidely.

achievers in all parts of the nation.Thesewomenhavedonegreatwork in

awide rangeof sectors.Their strugglesand aspirationsmotivatemillions. Letus keep celebrating the achievementsof such women and learning fromthem,” the PM tweeted with hashtag“She Inspires Us”.

Thesevenwomenwhoshared their“life journeys” includedKalavatiDevi,amason fromUttar Pradesh’sKanpur,who has helped construct over 4,000toilets; mushroom farmer Bina Devifrom Bihar’s Munger; and Arifa JanfromSrinagar inKashmir,whoworks topreserve and popularize Kashmirihandicrafts. Kalavati, Bina, and Janalso received the Nari Shakti awards.

Apart from the three, others whohandled thePM’s socialmedia handleswere Maharashtra’s Vijaya Pawar, whoworks to conserve handicrafts of thestate’s Banjara community, philan-thropistandfounderofFoodBankIndiaSnehaMohandoss,bombblastsurvivorMalavika Iyer, and Hyderabad basedwaterconservationistKalpanaRamesh.

BINADEVI, 43,Munger,BiharReferred to as the‘mushroom mahila’for popularisingmushroom cultivation in 105villages that has helped 1,500women, 43-year-old Bina wassarpanch of Dhauri Panchayat,Tetiabamber block, for 5 years.She has been involved inspreading digital literacy and wasawarded for training 700 womenon how to use mobileby Tata Trusts.ARIFAJAN,Srinagar,runshandicraftbusinessArifa, 33, is the founder of

Numdha Handicrafts and helpedrevive the lost art of Numdhahandicraft. She has trained morethan 100 women in Kashmir andemployed 25 Kashmiri craftpeople and increased wages ofher employees from ~175 to ~450.

VIJAYAPAWAR,Maharashtra,conservesBanjarahandicraftPawarhaspopularisedGormatiartsandhandicraftoftheBanjaracommunityofruralMaharashtra.From2000to2004,sheworkedoncollectingandpreservingthedesigns,andregisteredanNGOin2004.“Ithashelpedgenerateemployment.Asmanyas450womenareassociatedwithusandanother150runtheirownbusinessesnow,”shesaid.

KALPANARAMESH,architectandwaterconservationist,HyderabadRamesh studiedarchitecture and wentto the US. When she returned toHyderabad, the family and theneighbourhood had to rely onwater supplyfrom tankers. Ramesh and herhusband built a “sustainablehome” about eight yearsago where the effort was topreserve every drop of rainwater.She said the entire communityadopted rainwater harvestingand could survive the summer of2016 without buying a singlewater tanker. “If each one of usdecides to save rainwater, itneeds very limited cost, time andeffort to get this done,” she said.

Aftermanyfailedattemptsoverthepastdecade,BhendiBazaar,one of the most underdevel-oped and busiest business-cum-residential districts of thecity, is takingabig leapintothefuture in what's said to be thenation's largestclusterredevel-opmentproject.

The 125-year-old neigh-bourhood spanning 16.5 acres,notveryfarfromtheiconicCST,is already home to two newly-developed towers of 36 and41-floorswhichareopeninganewworld of modern living for thefamilies there. Around 610 oftheover 3,200 families and 128of the over 1,250 businesseshavemovedintothenewbuild-ings—all for free.

Thefamilies,whichwereliv-ing in80-ftdilapidatedhomes,aremoving into 350 sq ftmod-ernapartmentsnow.

This is the country's largestand one of themost ambitiouscluster redevelopment pro-grammestilldate.Itisbeingful-lyfundedbytheSaifeeBurhaniUpliftment Trust, establishedbythelateSyednaMohammedBurhanuddin,theformerspiri-tual head of the Bohri Muslimcommunity who are the vastmajority of the residents and

tenantsof thearea.Thesetwotowershavecome

up on the plot where 13 dilapi-datedbuildingsstoodandformpart of the 13 towerswhichwillbedevelopedat the site.

“The new neighbourhoodwillmeetthepresentandfuturesocioeconomicneedsofdiversecommunities living and work-ing in thearea,” SaifeeBurhaniUpliftment Trust SecretaryAbdealiBhanpurawala said.

The redevelopment com-prises 16.5 acres of land withmore than 250 decrepit build-ings, 3,200 families and 1,250shops,allofwhichwillbeincor-

porated into a state-of-the-artsustainabledevelopmentmod-el with wider roads, moderninfrastructure, ample openspaces andhighly visible com-mercial areas. The stateplanned to redevelop the areaalmost a decade ago but workwasmarredbyslowpace.

The project involves razing250 mostly dilapidated medi-um-rise structures and build-ing 13 high-rise towers in theirplace. These towers will houseexisting commercial and resi-dentialtenants,whowillbegiv-en ownership of their newapartments.
