What has NMC done to live within its means?

• Belt-tightening cost reductions have included: – Energy and utility conservation and retrofitting measures resulting in utilities savings of over

33% since 2010• Water and power conservation directives• LED lighting upgrades on Saipan and Rota campuses (Tinian in progress) – federally funded• Air conditioning retrofits for all three campuses ongoing – federally funded• CREES-NMC partnership for deep-well potable reverse osmosis system – federally funded

– Deferral of maintenance– Deferral of hiring resulting in $125k in savings in FY 2014 alone– Elimination of positions from a peak of 218 FTEs in FY 2006 to 117 FTEs in FY 2014

• In the Student Services area alone a total of six positions were removed and duties consolidated and reassigned resulting in a savings of $186k in FY 2014

– Cost sharing FTEs through grant funding resulting in a savings of $330k in FY 2014– Academic program consolidations– Larger class sizes

• Implemented minimum class size of 10 based on break-even analysis• Ongoing facilities renovations to expand classroom sizes

– Fewer class sections offered• Only one session of summer classes offered for FY 2014
