Pick up your assignment and review the document and your ideas.
• As a pair, choose the 4 best facts/ reasons that support the side you’ve been given.
• Each person will share and explain 2 of the supporting ideas. Split those up now so you are ready.
Team a find a Team B to work with. Turn the tables so you can see each
other.
• On the back of your gathering evidence chart, write the following information:
Ancient Athens was truly democratic: List the 4 main points/evidence that support this side.1. From Document ____:2. From Document ____: 3. From Document ____: 4. From Document ____:
• On the back of your gathering evidence chart, write the following information:
Ancient Athens was NOT truly democratic: List the 4 main points/evidence that support this side.1. From Document ____:2. From Document ____: 3. From Document ____: 4. From Document ____:
Starting now, you can give up your assigned position and argue for either side as a group.
• Decide on an answer to the question as a group. On one paper for the group, outline your decision. Your outline should address evidence and arguments from both sides. You should have at least 3 good reasons.
Example: Athens was truly democratic.
Reason 1: Even though only 12% of Athens could vote (Doc. C), they are still democratic for their time period because they “favor the many over the few.” (Doc A). Not everyone has to vote for it to be democratic. 5 year olds shouldn’t be able to vote and if you’re not a citizen of a country you shouldn’t be able to vote either, so many of the people who should get a vote got one. (We think women should have been able to vote too, though.)
