The benefits to youTraineeships are fast becoming a popular way for employers to create a valuable ‘pipeline’ for recruiting new members of staff into their business. Big names like the BBC, Halfords, Boots and Jaguar Land Rover have already set up their own successful in-house Traineeship schemes. Why not join them?

Learning Unlimited has developed a Traineeship programme which is designed to benefit young people who are out of work and employers who want to recruit and mould staff to their way of working. It’s a cost effective scheme that can help plug skills gaps and generate a pipeline of potential apprentices and employees who want to start a career in your industry.

It’s a short course for 16-24 year olds who are currently out of work and lacking ‘employability skills’. This means that they may already have qualifications but need help putting their CV together and improving communication and confidence for interview situations.

Employers provide work placements for the Trainees, which helps them get work ready and ultimately progress to an apprenticeship, further study or employment.

What is a ‘Traineeship’? Assess new talent and develop ‘work readiness’ in line with your company ethos.

Develop a pipeline of ambitious young people into your apprenticeship programme.

Provide valuable mentoring and coaching opportunities for your existing staff.

Contribute to the social and economic development of your local community.

Find a motivated and newly-trained member of staff without the expense of advertising and recruitment.

The Learning Unlimited Traineeship programme is fully funded by the government. However, we do encourage employers to provide a modest training allowance to help support the Trainee with travel and other associated costs.

What does it cost?

Usually between 8-12 weeks, although it could last anywhere up to 6 months. The length of the Traineeship depends on the progress of the Trainee.

How long does a Traineeship last?

What does the work placement involve?

The purpose of the Traineeship scheme is to prepare young people for the world of work, so when they leave they are ready for an apprenticeship or employment. For this reason, the work placement should reflect a real role in your company, enabling the Trainee to develop the skills, knowledge, attitudes and behaviours they need to succeed in a work environment.

Most work placements are three or four days per week, but this will depend on you, your industry and the Trainee.

What support will I receive from Learning Unlimited?

We provide the same type of support we would offer to our apprentices:

Are Traineeships flexible?

Aerodyn Engineering, Derby

“Traineeships are a great way to equip young people with the skills they need to move on to an apprenticeship and to make sure we are recruiting people with the right qualities. Without the Traineeship programme we wouldn’t have found Tom Russell, our latest Engineering Apprentice who is proving to be a real star.”

“When Tom came to us we saw how keen he was but he lacked confidence. The Traineeship offered by Learning Unlimited gave us both the chance to work together and build up the skills he would need. We were impressed with what we saw and offered him an apprenticeship. A few months in and we are already reaping the rewards and can see Tom growing into a talented engineer. Without the Traineeship I don’t think he would have progressed as quickly.”

“I knew I wanted to work in engineering when I was at school but I didn’t have any work experience. The Traineeship gave me the chance to find out exactly what it was like to have an engineering job as well as build my confidence. Working with Aerodyn is a brilliant opportunity to get the skills I need for my future career.”

Linda Brailsford, Business Administration and HR Manager

Tom Russell, age 18 from Derby

What happens at the end of a Traineeship?Ideally, the employer will interview the Trainee for a role in the business or apprenticeship place if available. If a position isn’t available, the employer undertakes an interview, together with constructive feedback and a reference.

The Trainee then leaves with valuable work experience, improved confidence, and the skills to look for job opportunities or apprenticeship positions.
